Introducing Jaine Hum @jainehum from South Korea

Jaine sets the table for turbulent scenes to unfold in her recent dining paintings. Disguise, deformity, and detachment are her uninvited dinner guests. Through theatrical staging, narrative, painterly language, and symbolic imagery, she visualises the tension between connection and isolation that defines contemporary life. Jaine curiously positions lifeโ€™s vital rituals against icons of death, creating an experience that verges on the macabre, surreal, and carnivalesque. Crows are frequent dinner guests. These protagonists/antagonists act as apathetic observers of tragedy who highlight the darker side of human nature. The human characters adorned in feathers and beaks emphasise this most acutely. In other works, fishbones circle the table, clocks protrude from bloated bellies, and Jaine depicts a panicked portrait of herself, trapped at a dinner as half-formed, anthropomorphic furniture. The subjects reflect a condition in which we are overwhelmed, desensitised, and suspended between awareness and disconnection.

๐Ÿ“… 10โ€“13 Feb 2026
๐Ÿ“ Hockney Gallery, Kensington Campus, Royal College of Art
๐Ÿ”ŠOpening Reception: Tuesday 10 Feb, 6โ€“8pm, Sound Performance at 7pm

The moment we call trees โ€œgreenโ€ and the ocean โ€œblue,โ€ we confine a world of subtle variation into fixed words, overlooking the countless gradients in between. Green to Blue explores colour not as a stable meaning, but as a fluid sensory experience shaped by language, memory, and perception. Across the exhibition, green and blue shift through cultural differences and personal ways of seeing, becoming carriers of lived experience, bodily sensation, and time. Rather than offering definitive interpretations, the exhibition presents colour as a connective threshold, inviting viewers to move beyond names and linger in an open, unresolved space of perception.
