JAKE HOTALING - DIRECTOR’S REEL

I haven’t posted a reel since 2022.. and since then my life and craft have changed in the most gratefully marvelous ways. I’ve worked with even more of the most talented, ambitious and passionate artists. From my first official short (that I co-directed with @littlemulch )& feature to my (coming soon) most recent, to travel, music videos and a wedding, random editorial storytelling concepts and more… I pinch myself. I wish I could tag every single soul that has gotten me to this point, I cannot put my gratitude into enough words!!! And to everyone who’s supported me, I can’t thank you enough either. I LOVE YOU ALL!! Thank you for watching and loving a boy while he follows his dreams 🥹🫶

To celebrate the first day of Pride Month I thought it would be perfect to finally release the trailer for STILL HIS. This short film tells the story of a young man who struggles with, alongside his sexuality, his relationship with God. Religion is a beautiful thing when practiced correctly and humanely; queer people all around the world find themselves involved with religion in many ways: during their childhood / early teens as they struggle to come to terms with their sexuality, involuntarily from outside origins (government, family), and those who still want to have a relationship with God (or the divine) but feel like they can’t. I don’t find myself religious anymore, yet growing up in CCD classes and in a semi-religious extended familial setting, I also had my doubts on myself and my relationship with God. This is a love letter to my younger self and every other queer person with any hint of religion inside of them with curiosity for more. I can’t wait to bring this short to you later this year.

We are artists after all 🫶✨

A short with @kattyruts about taking the jump. As artists, we can be intimated with the unknown: what’s out there, what we haven’t created but are scared to, and overall being vulnerable in the world. Inspiration not only comes from successes but also the failures, so why not take the risk? We are artists after all.

I wrote a few page script with Katherine in mind back in June when we also shot it. I loved the footage we acquired but wanted to turn it into something even more special. After working our busy schedules and sending voiceovers and trials back and forth, we got it. So happy to see what came from it!! Enjoy!!
