ptown summer. there’s no place in the world that makes me feel like this. It’s a time to step away from it all and think about my place in the universe and realign my priorities after a crazy summer pt 1 (gay summer famously runs from March to November, with a brief intermission around Labor Day). My family is everything to me - it’s like watching my favorite sitcom every moment of every day, where I am simultaneously a main character in theirs too. If the first questions we were asked are about our hot, sweaty, torrid affairs; or how the division of finances of our very fortunate life works; or if somehow one relationship within the three holds more legitimacy… as if the unconventional nature of our relationship authorizes the inquisition into conventionally taboo topics.

I have to wonder why not ask about what’s actually important in relationships? Have typical relationships been on transactional autopilot for so long they’ve forgotten what being in a relationship means? Have they forgotten it’s about the partnership. It’s about the journeys. It’s about the countless hours gardening and cooking and going on walks and cuddling with the animals? Have they forgotten it’s about building a home not getting a house?

I don’t consider myself polyamorous by label, though I’m technically practicing polyamory by definition. I instead consider myself afflicted with the privilege of finding two partners whom I love equally and with whom I share a beautiful life. The alchemy among our spirits fuses us, not some logistical feat or sexual appetite. I don’t know if it would work with anyone else and I don’t really care to try.

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t ask how the logistics work, because understanding them can open your eyes to new possibilities. And believe me, we want to share! It’s more to say examine one’s own relationship—scrutinize it for those kernels of partnership, joy, and love—for no other reason than you just want to take a moment to appreciate it.
