City of God 🙌 Cidade de Deus

Apparently most the cast to this film were hoodlums playing hoodlums - and they did it well.

There’s a slight sepia tint to this film, makes you feel as though it’s been soaked in the sunbathed favelas of Rio. The pace of this masterpiece is staggering and thrilling…The constant rolling of Brazilian funk, disco and soul along with the nightlife scenes, blue shimmering lights and terrifying shootout scenes suck you in instantly from the beginning.

Probably the best film you’ve never seen 🤗

I went through a stage several years ago where all I wanted to do was make vintage looking movie posters. So much so I spent painstaking hours creating a trio of fine liner, dot work detailed designs for La Haine, City of God and Jackie Brown. Each one of those films ooze with absolute class, rawness and style.

No illustration anyone could ever create would ever capture the panache these iconic films obtain, and nothing could ever pay enough homage either; I was pleased with the outcome of the triad. As a collective, just black ink on paper, they seem to click. A phase I want to revisit but in a much larger scale, (these are roughly A4 size).

La Haine; 1995.

Vinz, Said and Hubert. The dynamic between these three is cinematic magic ✨

“I ain’t ridin’ in no truck for no minute, man?!”

Jackie Brown, 1997. Quentin Tarantino.
Pam Grier, Michael Keaton, Samuel L Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, De Niro, Chris Tucker…
Smoothest film ever made. Best soundtrack to a film you’ll probably ever hear, (if that’s ya thang) 10/10. Probably the least ‘Tarantino-ey’ film out of them all - but that’s what you gotta love about it - it goes against the grain.
