Won some, lost some. Learned some, taught some.

Like many of us, I’m eager to close this crazy chapter and step into a new one in hopes that it’ll be filled with peace, contentment, comfort, a few more moments of stillness, and many more moments of joy. 2023 was a ride but it also brought a lot of blessings and I’m so grateful for those.

- I’m thankful for my friends who showed up in really amazing ways and shared beautiful and fun memories with along the way. life’s been crazy for all of us and having you still in my orbit is the best gift I could ever ask for.

- I’m thankful for my new job and the lovely community that came with it.

- I’m thankful for my practice and how it evolved and shifted to meet me exactly where I needed it to.

- I’m thankful for my body and how it allowed me to do absolutely fun and ridiculous things, teach for dozens of students, and move in new ways.

- I’m thankful for my mom and my grandma for being inspirations and showing so much love.

- I’m thankful the universe allowed @andrewstinger and I to find each other and start building the foundation of what’s going to be a really beautiful life.

- I’m thankful for the way I showed up for myself by walking away from something that didn’t align with who I am and what I stand for and trusting the direction I was heading and having my own back along the way.

I said, ā€œNothing magical happens at midnight.ā€ and someone I love very much replied, ā€œNo, but a new mindset can make magic happen.ā€

Happy NYE, my friends. Let’s see what magic we create in 2024.

Love always,

Tonight I got to teach to a packed room, guiding amazing open-minded students to dance, flow, and breathe together in the darkness during a new moon to a class that I curated out of pure inspiration (and a badass playlist)…and it was just amazing.
As an instructor (a little over 10 years in) it’s easy to hit bumps in the road and allow negative feedback to plant itself in your brain. You hear, ā€œBe yourself…but OUR versionā€ or ā€œYou’re not this/thatā€ over and over again…and it’s tough BUT when you finally figure out how to say ā€œfuck itā€ and shake that off, the magic really happens. I’ve been slowly peeling back those layers and found something new, magical, and so inspiring in my classes lately. I’m sitting here and feeling so much love and gratitude to my friends who’ve supported me and taken my classes, my mentors who’ve guided me and taught me the skills I needed to make them my own, my students for sharing space and trusting me, and the other instructors (of many different movement modalities) that I’ve taken from who have inspired me by purely being themselves and letting their light shine. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Check out these amazing people and let them inspire your movement journey just as they’ve inspired mine:

As I get older, I look back at younger photos of myself and notice how much I’ve changed. I see a wildcard, a kid just leaning into EVERYTHING that he loved and not really worrying about how those pieces would fit together. I see someone on fire for life because he saw limitless possibilities and a huge blank canvas on which he could create whatever life he wanted…and I believed that. During that time, I finished my yoga training, was working in downtown Chattanooga, and got involved in a really solid community of beautiful people. Most of these friends (many of whom I’m still very close to today) helped foster this community of fitness, yoga, active, and mindful individuals because they worked at Lululemon and believed in ā€œ(Igniting) a community of people living the sweat life through sweat, grow and connect.ā€ Through getting to know these awesome humans in Chattanooga, I was given the opportunity to teach a few classes in store and out in the community for Lulu. I really grew to love and believe in the brand and what they stand for. I’m so happy to say that I’ve started leaning more into the things I love again and not really worrying about all the little pieces falling into place. Feeling more ā€œin flowā€ with my life and getting back to that wildcard I used to be. Maybe I’ve been manifesting it for all these years, but Lululemon just came back into my life and I humbly and graciously accepted a leadership role with them. I can’t wait to see where this goes and the growth and connections that come with it. It feels good to be back on track. taken in New York, New York by @jakewaters7

Power | Someone recently told me, ā€œStand in your power.ā€ To me, standing in my power means to show up 100% myself. To stand tall and authentically in my strengths and weaknesses. To embrace all that I am and all that I will be. To boldly embrace my imperfections and realize they’re also my greatest assets and tools for teaching. To show up as me, imperfect and still completely whole. To bet on myself and know that in doing so, my life will unfold the exact way it’s supposed to with exactly what’s meant for me. To stand by and champion my beliefs, my people, and my goals. Someone recently told me, ā€œStand in your power.ā€ That was the BEST and FINAL piece of advice I’ll ever take from them. #thoughtsfromoldphotos taken in New York, New York by @jakewaters7

I was digging through the photos uploaded from my most recent backup again (late 2021/early 2022).
Nobody thinks of this posture as a standout in class. It’s often rushed through and used as a break in your sequence to offer students a moment of chill before diving back into a more rigorous practice. Relief from the shoulders, a chance a catch your breath and calm your heart rate. I like to add it into the beginning of my class and tell students to ā€œLet everything go. Feel grounded in your lower body and let your spine release. Think about anything you’re hanging onto from the day/week/life in general that isn’t serving you and, with every exhale, imagine it releasing down your spine and spilling onto the floor.ā€ Hopefully that visually allows them to let go of anything silly and return to standing ready to face the rest of their practice. I’m just rambling now, but maybe take this as a reminder to build your own foundation from the ground up and make it strong. Create your own safe haven to come back to, release, surrender to yourself, and let go. Stand tall and face everything knowing you’ve got your own back. In the end, you’re complete. You’re all you need.
