🎥 Staff Spotlight: Jalil Butron – aka Lito, aka Lili 👀
Meet our Creative Director, Jalil Butron — the visionary behind so much of what makes YouthBeat look and feel next-level.

With a background in commercial, documentary, and corporate filmmaking, Jalil brings a global lens to storytelling. After studying psychology at San Diego State, he made the bold move to Shanghai, shifting from recruiting to video production — collaborating with major brands like Dyson, GQ, and Michelin.

Since joining YouthBeat in December 2021, he's been all in on helping young creatives turn their passions into careers. He also leads our YB Pro division, opening doors for youth to step into real-world creative opportunities.

🎬 Whether he’s behind the camera or mentoring the next generation, Jalil's impact is undeniable.

Got a favorite nickname? Jalil goes by Lito or Lili—and yes, we use both. 🙌

🌟 Today, YouthBeat participated in the #MakeitBay Solutions Lab at Mama Dog Studios in Oakland! This incredible event brought together organizations from various industries to collaborate on developing robust workforce pathways that bring opportunities to our community and support productions filming here in Oakland. 🎬✨

Our team, including Executive Director Jake, Creative Director Jalil, and Senior Community Manager Gregory, joined the Workforce Development working group moderated by former YouthBeat Teaching Artist Tajianna. Together, we tackled key discussions on skill and training requirements for productions to qualify for the Oakland Film Rebate, identifying who needs to be at the table, and addressing current training gaps in the industry. 🛠️📈

Being collectively recognized as official Community Training Partners with the CA Film Commission is a significant step toward making film production in Oakland more accessible and cohesive across our region. We’re excited to be part of the movement that is shaping the future of film and media in our city! 🎥💪

Thank you to everyone involved for fostering conversations that drive positive change. Together, we’re building a brighter future for Oakland’s creative community! 🖤 #YouthBeat #CommunityImpact #OaklandFilm #WorkforceDevelopment #BayAreaFilm taken in Mama Dog Studios by @jalilbutron

By the lake we walked together, hand in hand. The people were laughing, the ducks waltzed around. You said Texas was gorgeous, I probably talked about Shanghai. There was nothing we needed, nothing more we could want. When I looked in your eyes, I could also see mine.

Last week my dear friend @trecastro asked, “when did you feel like you went from amateur to professional in your craft?”

In trying to be humble, I replied that I always try to see myself as an amateur so that I can be open to new information. The problem with this response is that it makes “professionalism” unattainable. You are relegated to always being an amateur.

It’s funny how the universe sends clarity to you as you need it. Just a few days later I was reading The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and he talked specifically about this point: what separates an amateur from a professional.

I think as artists we often make the mistake of thinking that our professionalism is dictated by the quality of our output. That is, if we can make art that we are proud of, we can officially take that “professional” pin and display it proudly on our shirt. However, Pressfield argues that professionalism is not achieved through the quality of our output, but through the quantity and consistency of our input. That is, by showing up daily to do the work it is we want to do. Take a second to think about what it is you do for a living. If you show up every day to work at your office crunching numbers on a spreadsheet, you are a professional accountant. You devote 40 hours a week to this labor. And through the years you will become better at your craft, perhaps even rise to CFO one day. And that’s fine if this is your dharma. But if you are someone that sits in that chair every day dreaming about what your life should be like, then you need to start devoting time in your day to make that happen.

You want to be a painter? Take an easel and a brush and sit there to paint.

A writer? Type away your next novel on your computer.

A musician? Compose and record your songs.

The key is that you need to do this with consistency. Set a schedule for yourself and follow it. Be relentless in your pursuit, regardless of the results. Become a professional.

And always remember the wise words of the Bhagavad Gita: you only have a right to your labor, not to the fruits of your labor. taken in The Museum of Contemporary Art by @jalilbutron

Recently I’ve been reflecting on my relationship with social media. It isn’t a big part of my day, but even just posting a few stories or creating a post takes time. The book I’m reading is making me question what my values are, because my values are not what I perceive them to be, but rather how I choose to spend my time and money. If you aren’t certain what your values are, take a look at your credit card statements or log what activities are part of your day; you may be surprised what you find. When we aren’t sure of our values, we will move through life influenced by what everyone else thinks. We may do or buy things, not because it is what we want, but because we believe others will admire us for it. All this is noise. Stepping away from social media is my way to tune out the noise. I am asking what it is I want to bring to the world through this platform. I haven’t arrived at the answers yet, but even asking is progress.

Our search for purpose and meaning in life is similar to looking up an address on your phone’s map app. You visualize where you want to go and set parameters: whether you want to take toll roads, if you want the shortest route based on time or distance, if you want to walk or use public transportation. Unfortunately, for many of us, the phone isn’t even in our hands. Family, partners, friends, society at large, everyone except us is manically trying to squeeze their index to get a chance to tap the screen and dictate how we move to our destination. For me, taking time away from social media is regaining control. For you, that may look different. But one thing is certain, if you continue going through life with the same knowledge, practices, beliefs, and ideas, you will just drive in circles. And if you do it based on someone else’s, you may get to your destination, only to find out when you arrive that this is not where you wanted to go.

I want to dedicate this post to my sister @aislinnb1 , who has been a guide in my self-discovery and is currently at her own crossroads of opportunity. I hope that I can do even just a fraction of what you have done to inspire me. May your path be yours to walk and your love be yours to give ❤️ taken in Hollywood, California by @jalilbutron

A couple weeks ago during my birthday dinner my friends asked, “what word would you use to describe this new decade of your life?”

Since that conversation, I went through the madness of organizing a live music event, explored what it means to love, had a card reading done for the first time, jumped in a sensory deprivation pod, ate dinner inside a movie theater, pondered the meaning of life alongside my amazing mother, tried a muffin with an egg inside (it was tasty!), suited up for a fancy gala at Oakland’s rotary club, created an NFT, cried after listening to the most beautiful voice message from my sister (love you @aislinnb1), began reading a book about Tantra, ordered the first batch of @graciasoakland stickers, started a first Sundays brunch tradition with my friends, filmed an interview with the Mayor of Oakland, and decided to delve into the world of non-monogamy.

“Possibility,” I replied.

So far, the dirty thirty does not disappoint. Thank you to all the beautiful people that have been alongside me on all these experiences. You know who you are ❤️❤️❤️

Oak trees are struck by lightning far more than any other tree. They are also more conductive, making them far better at redistributing that energy.

Last weekend was the first ever Gracias Oakland, but it definitely won’t be the last. In a span of less than a week, Oakland came together and created a space where people could connect, relax, and enjoy a beautiful night of live music. My dear friend @yonni_bay described it as “lightning in a bottle.” Gracias to all the artists — @sharif_hassan_ @realsavagemind @simoneemichelle @jordan_velour @yonni_bay @producerdn — who embraced uncertainty and joined along on this ride. Gracias to the team — @colabellaang @heyimjrmiller @whthaf @yonni_bay — that contributed their time and energy to make it happen. Gracias to the incredibly talented @zacharysweets for designing the beautiful logo and NFT. And Gracias to all the incredible people that donated, sang, danced, and became part of this experience.

Like oak trees, let’s take this lightning and spread it to others. Our ability to empower those around us through our positivity and our energy will make Oakland more special every day. It is the collective power of our individual actions that will create an amazing community. The Gracias Oakland seed has been planted and I am so excited to see it grow. Muchas #GraciasOakland!

Sharif Hassan is an unsigned American rapper and songwriter born and raised in Harlem, New York.

He delivers a unique rap style that's is deeply rooted from his early days of Slam Poetry. His introspective and Charismatic Lyrics blend well with Boom Bap and Current Hip Hop sounds, creating a masterpiece that is sonically rare among others.

We have been loving his track “Youtruth.” Check it out in the official Gracias Oakland Spotify Playlist and come see him tomorrow night! Tickets available at link in bio. taken in Oakland, California by @jalilbutron
