A special discovery in Florence… 🇮🇹

Today we visited Palazzo Davanzati, part of the Bargello Museums, and I was especially excited to see the extraordinary Guicciardini Quilt.

This remarkable 14th-century textile was made in Sicily and is embroidered entirely in white thread. Its detailed scenes tell stories from the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde. Seeing the intricate work up close was incredible—it is hard to imagine the patience and skill required to create something so detailed hundreds of years ago.

But the quilt was only part of the experience. The museum also has a fascinating collection of historic clothing, delicate lace, embroidery, children’s garments, and beautiful religious artwork. Each piece gives a little glimpse into everyday life and craftsmanship from centuries past.

I especially loved seeing how much beauty was created with needle, thread, lace, and fabric long before anything was mass-produced.

A memorable afternoon in Florence—and definitely one of the treasures of this trip. ❤️🇮🇹

Just a few wonderful meals in Orvieto! Michelle @adventuresitaly knows all the great restaurants and made sure we got to experience local specialties. She knows the chef owners so we were greeted at every restaurant with Italian Warmth and Graciousness!

Where are we staying as our base of “operations”? The Monastery of San Ludovico, Orvieto 🇮🇹

It has a history stretching back to the Middle Ages. The complex was established after the 13th century as part of the Franciscan religious presence on the dramatic volcanic cliff of Orvieto. The first official document mentioning the monastery dates to 1327.

Over the centuries, the monastery became closely connected with the Poor Clare nuns, who sought refuge here during the conflicts that affected Orvieto. In 1436, they were permanently established at San Ludovico.

The church was rebuilt in the 18th century, with the present Baroque structure completed in 1778. Inside are beautiful works of art, including a 15th-century painting attributed to Andrea di Giovanni and a 17th-century altarpiece by Girolamo Nebbia.

In 1834, the Company of Mary Our Lady, founded by Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac, took over the complex and made education an important part of its mission. For generations, San Ludovico served as a place of faith, learning, and community.

Wine and olive oil tasting at BARTOLOMEI Ristorante & Oleotecato tonight. We have had a lovely day stitching with @karenjohn.31 (I have several new embroidery stitches added to my repertoire!) and late afternoon visited the Duomo - none of my pictures did it justice and the fabulous tour arranged by Michelle @adventuresitaly was so special. It was built in medieval times and the history is simply breathtaking. To see the history of Christianity in this city’s cathedral - the frescos, mosaics, art and statues - just glorious! by @jallyt

Today finished three days at King Arthur Baking School attending an Intensive Class on Laminated 🥐 Pastry. Great class!
We made Blitz Pastry (Rough Puff) and then the dough for Croissants, Danish, and Puff Pastry on Monday. We made Palmiers (Mon) and a Potato, Onion and Thyme Galette (Tues) from the Blitz Pastry so that we had something each night to take with us.
Tuesday was spent laminating all the other doughs 2nd photo).
Wednesday we made our other pastries, proofed and then baked. All of mine turned out great - I will definitely be making lots of pastry in the future!

Sunday we picked up our rental car and started our journey to Norwich VT as we are taking a 3-day baking class at King Arthur Baking School.

Stopped at Salem MA. I had a general knowledge of the Salem Witch Trials but now understand how our American Justice System was impacted: presumption of innocence, right to legal representation, rules of evidence and burden of proof were adopted!

The pictures are from walking at Quechee Gorge VT Monday morning. I loved seeing all the wildflowers:
- purple flowering raspberry
- impatien capensis: can treat poison ivy
- joe pye weed
- fleabane
- water hemlock: very poisonous
- common mullein: an herb
