Yesterday night our sweetest, cutest, funniest, most handsome boy Otis passed away. His kidneys stopped working and it was his time to reunite with Lilly in doggy heaven, whom he loved so dearly. Losing two of my best friends in the span of 8 months is immensely painful but we take such solace in the fact that they can be together again and run and play and tussle like they used to. And we know, like our Lilly, he’ll be appearing in our dreams soon.

Whereas Lilly had a devious edge to her that required that she receive princess treatment 24/7, those who knew Otis knew that he was nothing but joy and light and sweetness (even though he definitely inherited his sister/aunt’s sassy demeanor upon her passing).

We all loved our perfect little companion for 13 years and 2 months, a full life, even when he would scratch us or try to drown us (he lost swimming privileges at a young age) or when he just HAD to jump on his mom’s lap even at formal dinner parties, never begging for food just wanting to make his presence known. He was the cutest sweetest boy and I have no doubts that calling him a baby for his entire life lead to his longevity. I love you so much Otis and I’ll miss you forever.

Today my sweet Lilly has passed on after 14 and a half years of constant love laughter and driving us crazy.

My mom actually met Lilly at my cousin’s house a few weeks before she was our dog during a puppy socialization visit for @guidingeyes. We had been on the waiting list for a “rejected” puppy for so long and we were ready for our puppy. My mom held Sharon, as she was known back then and instantly fell in love. We would’ve been happy with any puppy at that point but she felt a soul connection to that one, a puppy my aunt was very confident would pass the tests to become a guide dog. And whether it was a drop on the head from my grandfather or that Lilly also felt a connection in that moment, a few weeks later we got a call that our puppy was ready and she was deemed unfit to be a seeing eye dog and came home with us. I like to believe that she chose to find a way to flunk herself out of school. I think in that moment she realized she was destined for a life of service, not of serving other people but being served, constantly, by a loving family, and that she was. No dog has ever more fittingly earned the title of Jewish American Princess quite like Lilly, and everyone who ever met her knew how spoiled she was, but also how loving and sweet she was. She’ll be so terribly missed. Please hug your dogs a little harder for my family and I today, they deserve it. 🫶🏼 taken in Litchfield, Connecticut by @james.birge

This shit ain’t nothin to me man 🧛🏼‍♂️

2023 was definitely one of the years of all time. Started senior year, watched my mother get her doctorate degree, went abroad to Florence, internship in LA, Italy a second time for my moms 60th, cooked thanksgiving dinner, saw so many amazing artists with friends, worked hard, played harder, and finally, graduated from UM. Miami, I love you forever thank you for the best 4 years, I’ll be back. Thank you to all my family and friends who made this year memorable. by @james.birge
