WEDGE Ceramic Workshop had its official Opening Day this weekend and what a day it was!

It couldn’t have gone any better, honestly, if more people had come, I don’t think we would have made it through the day in one piece 😂

@james.pettinger managed to teach non-stop throwing lessons for 4 hours!! It truly was a feat of physical, technical and mental stamina!

Our “Celebration Pot” has been filled to the brim with handmade trinkets from all of our visitors, we can’t wait to fire it and see the final result! 🔥 Even if it is something of a creative fever dream 😅

We also need to thank @jenmasonphotography for taking some fantastic photos whilst all of the craziness happened around us! We barely had a chance to grab a drink so knowing that Jen was snapping photos was such a relief! Because as the saying goes, “Photos - or it didn’t happen” 📸

All this to say, WEDGE Ceramic Workshop is now officially open, our classes and memberships are live so if you’re looking for something fun and creative to try in Derby, check us out 🤗

Head to the link in our bio to find classes or join as a member today! 🔥

Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair Showcase Award 2025.

For our 2025 Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair Showcase Award we are delighted to feature the work of jeweller Emily Higham alongside ceramicist James Pettinger

Emily is a contemporary Jeweller who uses the process of enamelling to explore colour and pattern within jewellery. Using a combination of industrial liquid enamel layered over vitreous enamel, mixed with the decorative use of enamel foils and lustres, Emily creates delicate and aesthetical jewellery pieces that are inspired by the beautiful colours and patterns of honeycomb and the shapes and layers found within beehives.

James has a Degree in Furniture Design and Cabinet making and with over a decade of experience working in the Ceramics industry world has given James a respect for tradition and love of the processes involved. James is currently ceramics Technical Instructor at De Montfort University. He creates handmade, functional and unique pieces in his studio, in his garden, in Derby.

MEET YOUR MAKERS

JAMES

Ask anyone who has ever worked with him, he’s a gentle giant and a phenomenal teacher, who cares about your progress and wants to help you make the best pots possible.

…but his face can’t hide his emotions, so when you don’t take his advice and it all goes wrong, you can tell he thinks you’re an absolute melt 🫠

… but that’s why we love him 🥰

James Pettinger makes hand-thrown stoneware that's built to be used and loved. Working from his Derbyshire studio, every mug, bowl and jug is thrown on the wheel and finished with glazes that bring warmth and character to each piece.

There's something about holding a pot that was made by one person, shaped by their hands on the wheel, that you just don't get with anything mass-produced. James's work is a reminder that the everyday objects we reach for most deserve to be made with care.

Come and see James's work at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft & Art Fair Newcastle this June, alongside over 100 other contemporary designers, makers and artists.

🗓️ 19-21 June | Preview Evening 18 June
📍 Sport Central, Northumbria University
