James Bacchi points his phone at the sky and finds what most of us walk past without seeing — the exact moment a building meets a cloud, the tension between what we've built and what moves above it, the fleeting drama happening at the edge of every city block. His camera is always with him. The sky is always changing. The series never ends.

Bacchi is a photographer and curator based in Palm Springs and San Francisco whose ongoing mobile photography series, #inthesky, examines the shifting relationship between the sky and the built environment. Shot spontaneously since 2015, each image captures a fleeting intersection of beauty, tension, and vulnerability above the urban landscape— drawn from cities including San Francisco, Palm Springs, New York, Rome, Paris, and Budapest.

His work has been exhibited at the Piedmont Center for the Arts, Arc Gallery, and STUDIO Gallery, and featured at RED DOT Miami. Corporate collections include M&M Fine Art Services, El Camino Hospital, UBS Financial Services, Bridgepoint, and University High School in San Francisco. Bacchi’s photographs are part of the Museo Italo Americano Permanent Collection. His practice has been highlighted by BBC Culture, VOGUE Spain, FRAMES Magazine, and Manhattan Arts International, among others. He is a recipient of the 2020 Independent Arts and Media Grant.

Bacchi’s first book, IN THE SKY, published by Baroque Medusa Media, is set for a November release date.
