Ready to discover a Richmond you only think you know?

Richmond Fantastic: Shadowy Secrets from the Commonwealth’s Capital drops October 6th with 20 original fantasy, sci-fi, and horror stories set in real Richmond places: the VMFA, Carytown Watermelon Festival, Poe Museum, St. Stephen’s Church, Hollywood Cemetery, RavenCon, King’s Dominion*, and more.

* When I told my co-editor Catherine that my story was set at King’s Dominion, she wasn’t sure it counted as Greater Richmond. That’s why it’s good to be the publisher. (Spoiler: I made the cut.)

The stories range from the Colonial era through the post–Civil War years, the 1920s, ’40s, ’70s, ’90s, and right up to the present day.

The lineup:

“The Ghost Church” — Lindsey Baltz @lsbwrites
“The Phantom of the Roller Coaster” — James Blakey
“Fantasy Football” — Bill Blume @billblume
“All Dogs Go to Quirk” — Ember Brooks @emberbrooks.books
“The Elko Tract” — James Cole @jdcolewrites
“A Thousand Screeching Demons” — Grace Dunn @gracedunnwrites
“From Out the Scenic Solitude” — Arlen Fain @arlen_fain
“After Moonlight” — J.S. Furlong @iamjenfurlong
“Return of the Black Cat” — K.G. Gardner @kgg_writes
“The National” — Terry Hooker @thooker_author

Adventures in Bookselling – RETURNS

Unlike most retailers who mark down merchandise that doesn’t sell (or dump it on liquidators so it ends up in odd-lots stores), bookstores have been able to return unsold books to the publisher since the 1930s.

That creates some… interesting incentives

In 1995 I was assistant manager at the Jenkintown, PA Barnes & Noble. My boss had gotten burned a couple of times on O.J. Simpson trial books when corporate didn’t order enough for us.

So when Kato Kaelin (remember him?) came out with his book, my boss was determined not to get caught short again.

He ordered 1,000 copies.

We filled endcaps, covered tables, and built a massive pyramid in the middle of the store.

Final sales tally: 2 books.

At the time, a B&N manager’s bonus was based solely on sales. All the extra labor of unpacking, packing up, and shipping nearly a thousand books back? Didn’t touch his numbers. by @jamesblakeyauthor

Looking for Alternate History stories for our next anthology "VIRGINIA SIDEWAYS"

We’re talking Jamestown surviving as a thriving Swedish colony, Robert E. Lee accepting command of the Union Army in 1861, the Readjuster Party dominating Virginia politics for decades, or even Dr. J leading the Squires to 5 consecutive NBA Championships.
