Another night of stand-up comedy at the historic Cecil Hepworth Playhouse in Walton-on-Thames! šŸŽ¤

A wonderful audience, a beautiful theatre, and a great community of performers. There’s nothing quite like making people laugh.

That is exactly what it looks like and feels like before you’re about to go on stage. There’s a lot more going in your stomach and your head imagining the best and worst scenarios all happening at once LOL. taken in The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse - Theatre For The Community by @jamescostasideb

A little post-show celebration in England with Roger ā€œDodgerā€! šŸ»

After my stand-up set, one of my fellow comedians bought me a drink. It felt like a little victory award!

Then Roger, who was enjoying the show with his family, came over, congratulated me on my set, and offered me another.

I’m discovering something wonderful about British culture. Buying someone a drink is such a simple gesture, but it makes you feel genuinely welcomed.

Thanks, Roger Dodger! Cheers, mate! šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§šŸŽ¤ taken in The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse - Theatre For The Community by @jamescostasideb

Sitting in my car outside the @cecilhepworthplayhouse Cecil Hepworth Playhouse in Walton-on-Thames, talking to myself like some suspicious character, desperately trying to remember a comedy set I’d practically just written.

There’s something wonderfully terrifying about trying out new material. Your entire nervous system starts setting off firecrackers before you’ve even stepped on stage. And then you just have to get up there and do it anyway.

What I didn’t realize until last night was just how extraordinary this little theatre is.

It’s the last surviving building of one of Britain’s pioneering film studios, founded in 1899. The studios produced the first film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in 1903, helped launch the film career of Ronald Colman, and later welcomed Hollywood legends including Bette Davis.

The theatre itself was nearly lost to demolition, but the local community fought to save it. And here it is, still welcoming performers more than a century later.

Last night, that included me.

I’m discovering that stand-up comedy isn’t necessarily about memorizing jokes. At least not for me. It’s about storytelling, being present with an audience, and finding those wonderful little moments you couldn’t possibly have scripted.

The British audiences I’ve encountered have been remarkably generous with that process. They listen. They let you find your way. And sometimes they even laugh. Lol

I walked away feeling genuinely welcomed, grateful, and a little more comfortable being a beginner at something again.

There’s something special about a place where people are still willing to gather, listen, laugh, and give each other a chance.

And to think, it all started with me sitting in my car talking to myself.

Thank you to Janet, the WWAOS team, and everyone who helped make the evening so memorable.

This one got quite a reaction from my professor and fellow students. I've never watched anyone listen to a song I made before. It felt like I was on American Idol. Fun to experience. taken in Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts by @jamescostasideb

I asked AI which was the most remixed song in history and Amazing Grace was it. Did my little spin with it, James style. Last song of the summer course. 97/100. There is one part in it that just feels SOOO good. Curious if you see it too. My professor certainly did and left a smile on his face and mine. Hope it does for you too. taken in Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts by @jamescostasideb

Once I got the hang of Ableton, I had some serious deep emotion going on thinking of my dad as he loved these songs. I didn't know making music would do that to me. taken in Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts by @jamescostasideb

First foray into Ableton digital audio workstation for my technomusicology class. Rough start. I took a fellow comedian Craig's voice in his performance and interlaced it in here for forever mediocrity. But... if it was the sound when Metroid was dying... it's a masterpiece! taken in Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts by @jamescostasideb
