Sneak peek at a passion project I’ve been working on.

🦅 “Shoshone Tale” is a visually rich animated film that follows Hoochoo, a young Shoshone boy chosen by his people to retrieve a powerful, sacred flower hidden deep in the wild. But when the mischievous trickster Coyote steals it from his hands, Hoochoo must journey through fear, failure, and ancestral memory to reclaim his strength. Set against the breathtaking landscape of a Shoshone Landscape, forests, wetlands, and high cliffs, this story blends Indigenous storytelling with cinematic fantasy to explore themes of identity, resilience, and the quiet power of tradition. As light returns to the darkened forest, Hoochoo discovers that true strength comes not from what he carries, but from who walks with him — even when he walks alone. A film by James Cawley, a proud descendant of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation.

There is good news about a pause in border wall construction in Big Bend, but in the lower Pecos, construction continues and the threat continues.

The Lower Pecos contains hundreds of painted shelters, monumentally huge pictograph panels older than the pyramids. As Dr. Carolyn Boyd writes about the White Shaman Mural in our book Rock Art: an American Story,

"Nothing about... the mural is random, Like words arranged on a page, every figure is intentionally placed, and each layer of paint represents a layer of human action, decision, and meaning."

Follow the links in our bio for more information about the book and about threats to rock art in the Pecos and beyond. There are things you can do, ways to make your voice heard.

Sneak peak at what @ancientartarchive is building for Lake Amistad National Recreation Area. The video is by the talented @jamesdcawley of Centerstar Creative.
Before Lake Amistad, before the pyramids in Egypt, people came to this canyon to paint their sacred stories. For more details about this place and threats to it visit @shumlaarchaeologicalcenter taken in Seminole Canyon State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife by @jamesdcawley

In 1968 a nerve agent drifted off a U.S. Army test range and killed roughly 6,000 sheep in a Utah valley overnight. The proof was buried for thirty years. Hear the full story on the Dust and Echoes podcast.

In Utah, the world ended on a quiet Sunday morning.

🧦 Jed Thorn was looking for a matching sock when he looked out his bedroom window and saw his elderly neighbor running barefoot across her driveway with the

🧟‍♂️ The HOA president was sprinting after her on all fours.

🗺️ His wife was three hundred miles away in Moab. His daughter was brushing her teeth getting ready for church as he watched the carnage outside.

⏱️ Within one hour, Salt Lake City had fallen. He had ten hours to cross three hundred miles of hell to reach a mesa called Dead Horse Point, where the National Guard was about to blow the only land bridge connecting it to the world.

🛻 He had a stolen truck. A six-year-old. And a sun setting fast on a dying world.

The Utah desert at midnight.
A solo camper.
A voice outside the tent that knows his name.

He had been taught the rules as a child.

THE RULES (Do NOT Forget These)

😙 Do not whistle after dark.

🤗 Do not invite the dark inside.

🤫 Never, ever give the darkness your name.

He had forgotten the rules.

Now there is something with too many knuckles pressing into the wall of his tent. Something that speaks with his father’s voice.

Something that knows how long it can wait.

Skinwalker.
