@jamesdpoole is an ultra-runner and The North Face Explorer Team member based in East London. His training runs take him through local parks, along canals and into the pockets of woodland that dot the city’s edges. But despite these relatively benign training grounds, James has extensive experience of running in some of the world’s hottest locations.

In 2021, he lined up for @thespeedproject – an unsanctioned 500km foot race through the desert from Santa Monica to Las Vegas. Founded by Nils Arend and Blue Benadum, TSP has no rules, no spectators and is run predominantly by relay teams. But always eager to pursue his own adventure, James ran solo, crossing Death Valley in temperatures of over 40°C and completing the race in 110 hours, 53 minutes.

Far from being burnt by the extreme heat, James’ participation in The Speed Project has become an annual pilgrimage. In 2023, he was back on the start line. This time in Iquique, Chile for the first running of TSP Atacama, a new edition of the race run across the world’s driest non-polar desert.

Supported by his good friend and fellow runner @nickilange, he once again set out the complete the race solo. But rather than follow the established road route to San Pedro de Atacama, he would raise the stakes higher still on an adventure all of his own.

ATACAMA BONDS follows James deep into the desert dunes as he attempts to complete The Speed Project on a remote, inaccessible cross-country route that will push him, and his support crew, to the limit.

Jiuzhaigou100 start line feels. In a strange turn out for the books, the 100km race has become 88km split over two days. So just 51.7km today. But plenty of climbing and a high point of almost 4,000m. I’m not sure my sea level Lings are gonna like me. Or my quads tomorrow for that matter.

But that’s the way it goes. Stoked to get out and test the route for future years as part of the race’s Explorer Team! Big thanks to @jackyaojjy005 for the invite and look after us all so well!

Now let’s get this party started! LFG!

🚨 I think I’ve been training for ultras all wrong…

I’ve travelled all the way to China for Jiuzhaigou100, a 100km trail race, and I’ve just discovered the secret to elite endurance. 🐼

Eat. Sleep. Eat some more. Repeat.

No intervals. No long runs. No worrying about race pace. 😂

Honestly, the pandas might be onto something.
