GHOSTKEEPER

We can be haunted by the past, but don’t let it define you. Trust the process. Keep moving forward.

Let the shadows of self-doubt, worry, fear, toxicity, and entitlement become wisdom, experience, understanding, and self-forgiveness. You are now friends with the shadows. Keep them close.

Always be a little kinder than necessary, even to yourself. Everyone is on a journey. Trust that you will succeed. You may not get what you want, but you will get what you need.

Recognize the toxic traits that no longer serve you, even if they protected you in the past. Thank them for their service, and smile as you say goodbye.

This piece has become a portrait of a young, budding artist coming to terms with the truth that what haunts us also sustains us. In a flow of light beams and ghostly self-reflection, look inward, into the shadows. Now go deeper... and you’ll find the light.

Shadows can’t exist without light. Light comes first. The shadow always submits to the light’s authority.

LOVE WINS, and is UNDEFEATED.

There’s a magical sea people who live beneath the waves and rise to the surface for only one thing: to train at the gym and practice gymnastics.

Are you one of them, Lara? Why not. We’ll go with that...

Thank you for your creativity. I quickly realized the best thing I could do was stay out of your way as the ideas poured out of you: “Let’s try this! How about...?”

Working with a creative spirit, I let you lead. Good call. When you meet someone on the creator’s plane, your vision has to stay flexible. My job is to not get in the way of inspiration. All divine.

For the sake of art: what does this piece stir in you? Where do we take you below the surface? I’m so curious! We have so many new colors to paint with now.

There’s real bravery in making art. So many people never even enter that realm, and that feels like a tragedy. A life lived without art...

We can break through to them! Even if we reach just one person, it’s our duty. Don’t take this task for granted!

TO MY FUTURE MODELS! I set very simple, easy-to-understand parameters for the shoot... All I am asking: grasp it and deliver like this! THIS IS WHAT IS POSSIBLE. Strive for this in every take. If we can get 10% of this from you, we have succeeded. You are all ready to rise to new levels!!

Katya Ugalde is 14 years of love, caring, patience, and attention to detail. These are traits taught to her by the vast array of beautiful people who pour their love, care, attention, and patience into her. The whole dang village: family, friends, mentors, coaches, and federation... We can be proud of this young person for taking the initiative and going on this rewarding journey. We are in awe of your drive, above all your accomplishments. Each step is a victory or a learning experience. “You win or you learn.” And when we learn, we win.

Also celebrated are my villagers: the artists and works that influence and inspire me. The love you give is greater than the love you receive. All glory to God.

BLEU: I first saw BLEU (“Three Colors: Blue”) at the Denver Film Festival in 1993. It changed my life. I had no idea where cinema could go. A MASTERPIECE. To many top filmmakers, it is regarded as THE MASTERPIECE. Anything by Kieślowski must be studied and watched again and again. BLEU is the opening opus of his Three Colors Trilogy, and The Decalogue stands as a monolith of cinematic storytelling. The aching realism and all-too-human experience are something to BEHOLD. Please watch. No words can describe it.

I DID NOT expect to revisit this movie through this piece, but when I saw the footage, it shook me, and it had to be an homage. I hope you love it as much as I do! It’s a thrill to share!! A very personal piece. 💙✨

EMOTIONS INVADE. They storm, march in, occupy me.

The impossibility of true freedom from emotional attachment.

Film OVERRUN.

Narrative: elliptical.

Reveals: oblique.

Motifs: the color blue, the glass-bead chandelier from her daughter’s room, a blue lollipop wrapper.

Memory intrusion and the emotional interior she can’t escape or erase.

Small sensory rituals — tiny acts of control against overwhelming loss.

My ego, now a sugar cube.

A billion years of the mind’s eye plays out each second.

Galaxies merge, diverge, and dance in a riptide of dark energy.

“I feel bleu everywhere...

Above. Below. Suspended by light.

...when a color becomes sound.”

The unfinished concerto. Now she sees the music.

EVERYWHERE.

Dear NADI,

How cool it was to team up with you and your sisters! You’re a package deal, and I will never forget your wry humor and light-hearted presence on set. Remember the lizard on the fence at the Salty Mermaid? Florida is now famous to me for its vast array of critters!! (Did I just call you a critter? I am not calling you a critter! I swear!!!) 😅

But I do have a fondness for both of you!!! 🤣🤣😅 Anyhoo, these posts always come from the heart. 🩷✨🪽 I put myself back in the times we shared and our artistic journey together. Even now, as I write this, I have the biggest smile and laugh at those memories!! 🥰

I believe you need your sisters and they need you. It’s one of the most adorable and admirable family dynamics I have ever been around. (I pray for your Dad.🙏🏼)

Thank you for your artistic endeavors, pedigree, family dynamic, and young-soul enthusiasm! You keep my outlook young with the energy you put out in the world. I see your big heart and JOYous spirit. Your Mamma is a big influence, and I am so thankful to her for helping orchestrate all the moving parts. Dear Sophia,

HEART. Together we developed an underwater persona that you quickly inhabited. I asked you to blow me away, and without a doubt you could.

Newfound realms to perform in. The stage of your soul! Underwater is as natural to you as land. I am reminded of the many greats I have worked with, and that pantheon. Pedestals still to be occupied...

You have IT, and everything is accessible to you. Most people don’t take it. Be ready for breakthroughs!

After spending time with you and your family, and knowing Coach Anna and Natasha, I feel a big, inspirational drive to push myself further. Studying and developing this project became a passion. Without your pedigree and evolving legacy, I would only be doing a job.

We look into a mirror, or rather the reflection of ourselves underneath the billowing waves. The vision distorts and sways like a funhouse mirror. Scary, strange reflections turn into funny, intriguing, and ultimately beautiful works.

We define beauty through our process as we decode the true meaning of Discovery and Invention. It is all there once you know how to “LOOK.” The time we spent on set was a storm of epiphanies!

Thank you for the many eyes I had to INVENT, DISCOVER, and even ENDURE. I am finally at peace with our project and wait with anticipation for our next. I grow with you.

The challenges are real and unreal. The ART and the PROCESS are not for the faint of heart (and in your case, also the SPORT).

Recognize and break the frames that do not suit you or your goals. And never stop dreaming bigger.

STARLIGHT✨

The fiercest model can devour you with a look! She is here to EAT YOU!! The judges are but a tasty snack.

I discovered Katya during the walk-out years ago, when you took your place on the carpet with flowing hands and impeccable grace! “Who is she???” People who have seen you grow up remember!!

Now I study the walk-out... until she takes her starting position. A trained eye can tell how well a gymnast will do before the music begins.

Once the music begins, I stop watching. I must focus on my job and capture each moment as it comes. (That’s why I have to ask, “how did you do?” after the competition!) I cannot react — by then it’s too late! I anticipate the next skill and put the camera where it needs to be.

A PROFESSIONAL knows her angles and lines and needs little direction to shine in front of the camera. This light was made for you! I believe it rises to your level of talent, expertise, and ability. I am very proud of our work together and everyone who made this possible. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 (a long list!)
