POSTS STORIES REELS
📻 20 YEARS OF DUBSTEP 📻 The early days of dubstep conjure up memories of grey Glasgow streets in the rain, trundling up Scott St hill to The Art School for a Fortified Sessions or a Mungo’s Scrub a Dub dance with @dannygreeman and Campeazi — a tradition we’re carrying on in our own way in 2026. It’s been 20 years since I started buying these records, and recently I’ve found myself buying them heavily again, researching and fully indulging in the sound. Those early excursions into the space, depth and darkness of 140bpm bass music are what eventually led me into reggae, dub and dancehall, and ultimately towards what Hometown Sound System has become known for. Looking through my record collection now, it stands as a document of the music and all the different eras it’s moved through. Over the last couple of years we’ve partnered with @fuse_glasgow and hosted comrades like Kahn & Neek, Commodo, Goth-Trad, Youngsta, J:Kenzo and Neffa-T. Between that, my occasional UK bass excursions with @soundglasgow and the publication of Lauren Martin’s Aftershock: The Seismic Impact of Dubstep, I’ve been thinking a lot about the whole story and what a pleasure it’s been to witness it from my position up here in Glasgow, a little removed from where much of the music was taking shape in London, Bristol and Leeds. This radio show is a condensed one-hour go at the history of the music over the 20 years I’ve been buying it. An hour obviously isn’t enough, but the vibe is there and it marks me stepping properly back into this music as a DJ. There’s plenty of 140 business happening on the sound system before the year is out too. SOUND is returning, alongside some big collaborations with FUSE and a few DJ bookings around the place. Back to the bass weight. Love to @radio_buena_vida 🔗 20 YEARS OF DUBSTEP — link in bio by @jameshometown_
PRINCE FATTY & HORSEMAN MEET HOMETOWN SOUND SYSTEM 🇯🇲🔊 Friday 27th November we’re welcoming two absolute heavyweights of UK reggae to The Art School for a proper sound system session. Prince Fatty is responsible for some of the finest reggae productions of the last two decades, keeping the traditions of Jamaican recording alive with his unmistakable analogue sound. Alongside him is the legendary Horseman — drummer, vocalist, entertainer and one of the most charismatic characters in reggae music. A true veteran who’s been holding it down for decades. We’ll be bringing the full Hometown Sound System into the dance, with James Hometown and Sippa Seb selecting alongside our guests. Roots, reggae, dub and dancehall music played the way it was intended — loud and through a proper sound system. 🚫 NEVER AGAIN 🚫 A new letterpress print I’ve been working on, inspired by the protest posters and political material coming out of Ireland from the 1970s until the 1990s, particularly the resistance to Orange Order marches through the nationalist Garvaghy Road community in Portadown. I’ve always been drawn to the visual language of political protest. Bold type, limited colours and a message that doesn’t leave much room for interpretation. I wanted this to feel like something that could have been printed and taken straight onto the streets in the 70s, rather than something made 50 years later. Set and printed by hand - 1/5. Still buzzing from Saturday night at Stereo. Genuinely one of my favourite shows in the last few years. Love to all the HTP family ever thankful 🙏 Getting the chance to play end-to-end, working my way through the different corners of sound system music, was a real blessing. Even more so having Killa P alongside me on the mic. Four hours flew by. Massive love to everyone who came down, danced, listened and brought the energy from start to finish. Nights like that remind me why I’ve dedicated so much of my life to this music. Big thanks to Killa P for the energy and trust, and to everyone who continues to support SOUND NEXT ONE IS 21/11 with MAGUGU - announcing tomorrow 🫡 Captured by @rossbside and @haddyy_____ 📸 More of this family 🫡 by @jameshometown_
I’ve dedicated my life to collecting, researching, playing and performing in SOUND SYSTEM MUSIK for almost 20 years - it’s been far too long since I’ve had four hours to myself behind the decks. Tonight at Stereo for SOUND I’m going to be digging deep into my record collection and playing music from right across the history of sound system culture, from 11pm-3am, with KILLA P joining me at 1am. I couldn’t ask for a better MC - an expert in grime and dancehall with years of experience from Roll Deep to his own solo work. I’ll be starting with ska, rocksteady, roots and dub, moving through every era of dancehall, and following the connections into jungle, grime, dubstep and everything in between. Tonight at Stereo, all on the Hometown Sound. Come through 🔊 📸 2 - @izzylleach ; the rest is @haddyy_____ & me 😌 by @jameshometown_
DUB CLUB welcomes CRAIGY WONDER (Mungo’s Hi Fi) 🔊 THE TEACHER ✍️ In our opinion, the best bass music DJ in Scotland and one of the finest in the world. No exaggeration. Craig’s knowledge, selection and understanding of sound system music are on another level. From foundation reggae and dancehall to dubstep, grime and beyond, there aren’t many DJs who can move between styles and eras with the same depth, confidence and instinct. A huge influence on what we do at Hometown and a genuine master of his craft. Always a privilege to hear him play, and even better to have him in our own dance. Expect a proper education in bass music. 🔊 SIMON SCOTT at DUB CLUB 🔊 If the last 30 years of underground UK bass were a crime scene, Simon Scott’s fingerprints are all over it. As a DJ, promoter, record collector and record shop owner, Simon has been putting in the work since the late ’80s. From Exodus and the beginnings of SUBDUB at Leed’s West Indian Centre, through to his own Tribe Records shop, Dancehall Science and of course Outlook and Dimensions, his impact on the UK bass underground is unmistakeable. Simon demonstrates this ever-presence behind the decks. The most serious of collectors with a deep knowledge of Jamaican music and its many offshoots — roots, dub, rub-a-dub, digital dancehall, steppers, dubstep and beyond. Simon joins us at The Art School for an extended session powered by Hometown Sound System. One of the best in the game. IYKYK HTP FOREVER by @jameshometown_
