Today marks the release of a new @lifeband track - Turning In - and with it, a new visual offering.

Myself and @luke_hallett_ took a drive out to spurn point and made something with our hands, a camera, various bits of glass, some lights and a tent.

So lucky to be able to offer my contribution to the huge collaborative effort, along with so many sound people, that is the roll out of their upcoming album - ABSTRACT / NATURAL.

HØUSE returns to UNTHINKABLE.

Yesterday, UNSEEN IMAGES launched at Humber Street Gallery, with HØUSE included in the exhibition a year after its live performance and record release at Maister House as part of the festival.

Created by @jamesmilocooper from footage we captured throughout the project, this abstract documentary follows HØUSE from tape loops and improvised recording sessions to the handcrafting of its physical editions.

HØUSE, one year on.

Last October, I shared HØUSE through a live performance at Maister House and a small edition of individually crafted records, as part of UNTHINKABLE Festival.

The project grew from tape loops and guitar experiments in the building, developing through improvised sessions with Daniel Thompson and the Eclectic Orchestra quartet.

Using footage we captured throughout the process, James Cooper created an abstract documentary tracing the journey from the first recordings to the cutting of the vinyl and making of the sleeves. We first showed it alongside the live performance.

A year later, HØUSE returns to UNTHINKABLE. The film will be shown as part of the UNSEEN IMAGES installation at Humber Street Gallery, launching on Tuesday 6 October.

I’ll be sharing a few fragments over the coming weeks, revisiting the music, the film and the people who helped make it happen.

DEFECTOR - THE GLASS LAKE

Heres a couple clips from a video I made for @defectorgram earlier in the year. We wanted to make something gnarly, so gnarly we made. Lots of slow shutter, prism waving and post layers! I haven't made something like this in a while so it was good to get right amongst it!

NIGHT FLIES - THIS WAY

My second time working with these guys. Had a lot of fun experimenting with a few fun but simple lighting set ups for this one. Gobo torch and some dust sheets were the secret sauce.

TOMORROW

I will be selling some prints at Mucky Mania - an all dayer organised by @muckypuppromotions at the pack horse in Leeds @upstairs_thepackhorse . Live music in one room, artist stalls in the next, and plenty of time to enjoy both.

The fourth and final instalment in the LIFE - ABSTRACT / NATURAL music video saga lands with Drinking Games.

This one is a celebration of everything leading to this point, with little references to previous singles and videos sprinkled in here and there.

We also finally let Mez sing to the camera for this one, the catch was that he had to walk a country mile on a treadmill.

Shooting with a rear projection was a new challenge but left lots of room to experiment.

Makin movies, makin moves

Huge pleasure and privilege to start my year off with a Screen Yorkshire skills bootcamp.

Connected with some amazing, like-minded and talented creatives who were also on the course. It’s great to see that shared love for the craft and I hope we cross paths again soon!

I’ve definitely gained a lot more confidence not just in myself but that a career in the film industry isn’t completely impossible!

From the studio: James Cooper

James’ work circles repetition, contrast, movement and decay, often shaped by the relationship between people and place.

For him, making begins with a simple need to create, and the connections that form through that process.

During his time in the studio, James has been pushing beyond his comfort zone, stepping into directing and co-ordinating projects while building confidence in his ideas and finding a clearer voice with collaborators.

He’s especially drawn to experimentation across pre-production and production, where ideas evolve through working alongside other creatives.

James is part of CTRL, Hinterland Creative’s mentorship programme supporting emerging creatives through real-world projects and studio experience.
