Ever been told to add loft in Bunkers???

It’s killing your bunker play especially from firm sand, watch me hit a high soft bunker shot from firm wet sand… face open at set up but square at impact!

Good players intuitively find this out but many have had it taught out of them! Start open and shut it down, this will stop you leaning back and scooping which is the least likely way you’ll hit high softies!

Stop Pushing into the Ground to make your right hip go back!!! 🛑 ✋

I know this sounds contradictory to what a lot of people are saying but bear with me! When throwing or hitting side on we don’t push our right hip back, so why would we do it when we play golf? I can’t answer why everyone is suggesting we should but it’s not going to help your game! ⛳️

Try this @faldo006 drill to get the right feeling in your game, and if you’d like me to look at your swing, comment “swing” below and I’ll send a link to a Free Game Evaluation on @skillestapp

If you’ve been working on getting the club “square to the spine angle” there’s a couple of things you should know!

1. It’s not square to the target even though people use this term, it’s closed at this point so you’ll need to use change of tilts/wrist angles to square the face up.

2. It doesn’t help control Clubface control, because the simplest way to swing an object on a circle is to keep it on the circle, not create a position that requires you to change plane!

Yes you can learn to swing it this way but it’s not imo the most efficient way to control the 2 most important skills of Golf, Low Point and Face Control. If you’d like to find out how to swing on the circle and improve your golf then head to my Bio and click Free Game Evaluation 👍

When this clients body leans too far left at setup, his right hand goes weak, the downswing gets steep, and he had to “throw” his hands to save it. By the end of this lesson we’d moved his upper body slightly more centered so the right hand could sit on the side of the grip and the club could come down without him having to rescue it. This resulted in better shaft lean, more compression and better face control 👍

🚨 Winter Planning With Elite Players ⛳️

It was great to see @oscarteuten157 in yesterday to plan our winter work, to match his goals for next year. One of the key challenges when working with low handicap competing players is to review the year and work together to decide what to change.

Oscar has always struggled with a little bit of an inside takeaway and stuck under downswing making him susceptible to blocks and hooks, we decided to push towards a more fade bias move to reduce these shots.

The key feels:

- More in front backswing (arms lift and laid off)
- Transition with left shoulder lower (steeper shaft)
- Turn left through the ball (feels down and left)

The results were lower more penetrating flights with left turning shots reduced massively.

This is just part of our work along with practice plans and skill acquisition that match the stats he’ll be keeping more religiously this winter 👍

If you’d like to get your game in shape this winter, comment “Winter26” below to receive details of my new Winter Plan before anyone else

🚨 Fixing Hooks, Blocks, Thins and Fat Shots ⛳️

One of the most common mistakes I see is from players misunderstanding that changing body motion has no Clubface awareness element. If you attempt to close the face more or want to work around a closed face by pivoting, you’ll need a tilted turn not just a turn.

So if you want to stop being stuck under or sliding lower body too much, get the face square with more loft on it and you’ll find covering the ball way easier.

Give me a follow if you found this helpful and if you want me to cover any other topics let me know in the comment section 👇

🚨 The Swing Of Jacob Bridgeman ⛳️

Fresh off winning the Presidents Cup yesterday here’s a look at what I notice in his swing, he’s known for his putting but he’s a sneaky good ball striker.

- Club outside the hands in takeaway and more closed bias which will cause some of the more unusual movements later in his swing.

- Top of backswing he’s still got a fairly strong Clubface and he’s created depth through retracting his right elbow quite far behind him…. This position directly causes the next movement!

- His downswing comes down above the plane before he transitions hard into right side bend to both shallow the club and help create the forward shaft lean required to square up his clubface.

- Impact he’s closer to the ball than he started and for most this pattern would cause more issues than it solves, but he’s elite at controlling it and I’m sure we’ll see him attempting to reduce some of these motions over the coming years to help reduce strain on his body and also most importantly help him control the face more under pressure.

If you’d like me to analyse your swing and help build you a winter plan of improvement, comment below “winter”!

🚨 Avoid These 3 Common Myths In Your Golf Swing ⛳️

These common tips are hurting your game and they’re not the usual ones you’ve seen before!

1. Turn your shoulders more for more distance- The goal isn’t to just turn your shoulders more it’s to coil up correctly! In my experience amateurs often too much and lose that coil thinking turn number is the goal, and in doing so lose distance and strike.

2. Lower Clubface Closure Rate is good- This is a classic just because we can measure it doesn’t mean we should! While it sounds logical, the circular nature of the swing means we require Clubface closure and a better analysis would be how consistent is your closure rate! Too many end up working on a shut face backswing they can open in the downswing which does result in a lower face closure rate but doesn’t relate to hitting an object side on.

3. Flexion closes the Clubface- it doesn’t it opens it! Stand with the club in front of you and push your hands towards the target, adding flexion of the lead wrist. Where does the club face point? It’ll be delofted and open to the target 👍

Bonus. You need to clear your hips to get compression- again factually incorrect, if you start in the right shape you can get ample compression without clearing your hips. Clearing the hips is a match up for a closed Clubface… it actually requires you to push your hands further forward to create compression. Get the start right and you don’t need this match up and compression will feel more natural immediately!

Have I missed any obvious myths you know of? Let’s get this comments section to blow up with helpful myths or even comment ones you think might be and I’ll tell you if they are or not. Let’s make this the most helpful post anyone ever saw, instead of the usual social media rubbish!

🚨 Stop Making The Golf Swing More Complicated Than It Is ⛳️

The golf swing is simple…. Not easy, but simple! I see too many people trying to make it into something it’s not by creating manipulations and calling them match ups to sell what is essentially two non natural movements to players as correct.

We know how to hit side on… how to create coil and compression, but it’s not what you think it is. Start right, and have the right intention and the swing becomes a bent forward version of all the other side on sports.

Of course you can continue to keep trying to close the face and open it on the way down and argue it’s less of a manipulation than moving the club around the circle….

Simplify your swing this winter with one of my in person or online monthly lesson options! If you don’t believe me check out the reviews I get on @skillestapp

🚨 Backswing Drill- This makes it impossible to get your backswing wrong! ⛳️

I love this drill as it works with any level of player, from Beginners to Pros, it simplifies what can be a confusing part of the swing, the backswing!

By relating it to something else we already know how to do, suddenly we’re not held back by overthinking or clipping things onto our body to force the position!

How to do it:
- Hold the club out in front of you the way you would if you were hitting a tree or playing baseball/rounders.

- Swing around on the horizon (shaft stays parallel to the ground)

- Add in your forward bend (golf posture, bend from hips with soft knees)

- Swing down into the ball

Use it as an awareness drill (where the backswing should be) or if you want to challenge yourself try and hit shots from that position. You’ll notice all your backswing flaws go away, and your downswing match ups will be on show. (Meaning you’ll see what manipulations you’ve been making to make your old backswing work).

🚨 Swing Changes Before and After ⛳️

I preach a lot about set up and backswing for a reason, almost all of the focus on this change has been putting the club up in a better position so they can react better on the downswing!

It fixed:
- Steep Downswing
- Early Extension

No stupid drills trying to shallow the club or holding the butt back… because they don’t work! They’re sticking plasters that change the aesthetics in the drills but will never change when a ball is placed in front of you.

This is over a year of work on and off lessons and developing the understanding of how the club should move, and how the set up and intent precedes the motion.

If you’d like to hear me talk through the changes we made and why, comment “Swing” below and I’ll send you the video. Alternatively give me a follow on Skillest (link in bio) and you’ll see more videos like that explaining students changes and also some tips on how to play better golf.

I’ve still got space on my In Person and Online Coaching Options but be quick I’m almost full up before the winter rush starts. Everyone who’s had a bad summer deciding this winter is the one they get ahead of their friends…. Don’t be left behind!
