Collaborating with @jamestfarley is one of my favorite things to do. We took some of the new @studio_australis gear out to my local park to commune with nature. taken in Burnt Mill Creek by @jamestfarley

I want to acknowledge and thank @artscouncilwilm for the support they give artists working in our community.

Earlier this year, I received one of their Artist Support Grants. This allowed me to upgrade my tintype studio for more flexibility at pop-ups and for field work. This support gave me the freedom to take on projects at Fort Fisher, along the banks of Burnt Mill Creek, and multiple pop-up venues throughout the summer. I’ve been able to challenge myself and grow as an artist.

Applications are open for the next round right now, and I encourage all local artists to apply!

Cheers ✨

Also, shout out to @alison_harsh for helping me find my feet in the field, and for taking some photos behind the scenes.

This project was supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

We Live Here 📸

Today we wrapped up our summer photobook class at DREAMS of Wilmington! The students took cameras home each day to document the people and places that fill their summer. They then designed, sequenced, and produced their own handmade photobooks. 📚✨

This project is part of an ongoing series of DREAMers learning photography and documenting life in Wilmington, facilitated by local artist James Farley.

Had an amazing time at the opening of @jordangraceowens exhibition at the Fried Fruit Art Space! 🍎🍋🍓

The work was absolutely incredible filled with massive sculptures, vibrant colors, bold shapes, and immersive 3D elements that made every piece feel alive. Such a fun and inspiring experience.

@sarahpeoplesstudio “Through the Oyster Speculum” exhibition captured by @jamestfarley

On view until September 9, 2026

“Such a predetermination to eat this big universe as her oyster or her egg, and to be absolute empress of all height and glory in it that her heart could conceive, I have not before seen in any human soul,” Thomas Carlyle on American Transcendentalist Margaret Fuller’s hunger for experience.

In a multimedia exhibition of sculptural installation, light, and sound, Sarah Peoples: Through the Oyster Speculum reveals the stories, legends, myths, and expressions deployed as shorthand to make sense of American identity and culture. At the exhibition’s center, a large diorama recreates the grand American wilderness as a theatrical tableau. This immersive environment invites close inspection, revealing instability and distortion beneath familiar narratives. Using humor and wit, Peoples demonstrates how the very ideas meant to define a place can simultaneously obscure other truths, creating parallel realities or mirror worlds that coexist rather than resolving into singular meaning.

The world, and specifically American ideals, are Sarah Peoples’ oyster, and she cracks them open through a multivalent speculum. Derived from the Latin specere, “to look,” a speculum refers to three distinct items: a mirror, the iridescent beauty mark on a bird’s wing, and a medical tool for inspection. In these capacities, a speculum reflects, signals, and reveals. The installation of artworks encapsulates all meanings of the word. By foregrounding these disparate functions, the exhibition spotlights the unstable ground on which perception rests. To look through the oyster speculum is to see through the lenses of culture, history, and desire.

We had such a great day meeting people and making sun prints at In Bloom Festival in Leland 🌷

Thank you to everyone who visited our table and thank you to @lelandparksandrec for the invitation! We can’t wait to bring more photography workshops and eco-art activities to Leland!

Shout out to our new friends at @scrapexchange who do such cool work. They had barrel loads of old slides and film canisters for us to play with. We even made some cyanotypes of old slides (with varying degrees of success) ✨ taken in Leland, North Carolina by @jamestfarley

The next instalment of DREAMers Dispatch drops tomorrow 🚨 Only a limited number available. Get your copy this Friday at the DREAMs Spring Showcase.

I’ve had a blast working with these talented young artists these past four months. The theme for Spring was COLORFUL CHAOS, and that is what we had. The experimental photography and bookmaking class explored natural and artificial lighting, long exposure, motion studies, color, portraiture, place, and digital darkroom techniques (can you tell?). The students each created a photography zine and contributed work to the collaborative dispatch.

I know I’m biased, but It’s really good 💫

It’s been a while since I’ve shared my own wandering on here, but I’m slowly coming to know my new neighbourhood.

This is from one walk in early Spring, from Central to Sunset, parallel to the Port of Wilmington.

It’s hard to beat looking at photobooks at the start your day ☀️📚

My Intro to Digital Photography class did an amazing job making and sharing their first ever photobooks. I am blown away by the quality of work they are producing this semester 👏🦅
