“Dichotomy” and its meaning ⬇️

Made entirely from retired pickleballs, Dichotomy recontextualizes balls that were used in play into a composition that invokes movement in the viewer. Each ball is painted in slightly different complimentary tones, causing the work to continuously reconfigure itself as you walk around it. It resists a single view point…instead, it asks the viewer’s participation, shining light on the idea that perception is contingent on perspective and position.

The red and blue also references the dualities within pickleball and life itself…competition and connection, power and ease, offense and defense, hot and cold, Yin and Yang. Rather than existing in opposition, each force (and color) is defined through the presence of the other.

Sometimes you just need to start over.

This work has been sitting in my studio begging for some love lol Made this piece “Dream Big” back in 2019 and although I love the concept, and it still resonates with me… over the last few years, the composition had evolved into more of an eyesore than anything. Like many things in life, sometimes you just need to start over.
