I haven't been to the doctor in a few years and decided to get my annual check up on my birthday. The test results came in later that day and I found out I have diabetes. My A1C, which is a measure of your average blood sugar over the last 2-3 months, was 10.9% - well beyond the prediabetes range of 5.7-6.4% and diabetes range of 6.5%+.

The news didn't come as a shock to me. Looking back, drinking 2 cans of Coke per day, eating without intention, and being mostly sedentary did not help.

My doctor put me on metformin - a common medication to help lower blood sugar levels. She wanted to try this and lifestyle changes before considering other options like insulin or GLP-1.

I took her recommendation seriously and made appropriate adjustments, mainly with my diet (physical activity has been a challenge because of gout, that's another story). With that commitment, from March to June, my A1C dropped from 10.9% to 6.1%. Additionally, I lost about 15 pounds which helped in other areas like blood pressure and cholesterol.

Now while I am ecstatic about the numbers being better than before, the reality is I haven't felt "great". I don't have much of an appetite despite loving food, encountered some GI issues because of the meds, and have been tired/lethargic. Still, I am grateful to not let this silent problem continue before it leads to other issues.

If you're still reading this, thanks lol. I've hesitated sharing this for fear of judgment (e.g. look at what you eat, you deserve it) or losing out on opportunties but I wanted to share something that might not make it to the "highlight reel" and to remind you to get your annual check ups!
