You can’t live in today’s world without social media.

Jeremy Jones found that out the hard way.

He was interviewing a potential assistant when she stopped mid-conversation and said Mr. Jones, you have no social media footprint. In today’s world, that’s not acceptable.

She was interviewing for a job. And she was chastising him.

Nobody is more proud of their culture than a Jamaican. And after talking to Garth Laird and Jeremy Jones I completely understand why.

3 of the 5 fastest men in history. 3 of the 5 fastest women. Reggae. The food. The hospitality. The warmth of a people who will invite a complete stranger into their home without a second thought.

Sandals lets you read to kids on your vacation. Here’s how it works.

The Sandals Foundation Reading Road Trip brings books into local Jamaican schools.

For some of these kids it’s the first time they’ve ever met a visitor to the island. Jeremy Jones said the look on their faces when someone walks in and reads them a story is indescribable.

And you leave the books behind.

That’s not just a vacation. That’s something you carry home with you.

What does kindness look like in your culture?

Garth Laird from Sandals Resorts gave me an answer I wasn’t expecting.

In Jamaica, kindness doesn’t always look the way you think it does. It looks like a nickname. A joke between friends. Someone calling you exactly what you are and meaning it with love.

“We take everything seriously, but we take nothing seriously.”

That line hit different.

The number one tip every leader should know?

Learn how to listen.

Derek Lloyd from Norwegian Cruise Line said it best:

“You have two ears and one mouth. Use them in that proportion.”

We are so quick to respond, to fix, to advise. But sometimes the most powerful thing you can do as a leader is stop talking and truly hear what someone is saying.

Not to solve it. Not to one-up it. Just to listen.
