I met reporter @nealaugenstein more than two decades ago on the metro beat. A truly talented reporter and absolute pro, Neal reached out to me recently in a very different phase of my professional and personal life to ask me why I feel Pride. And I was so happy to share how my Pride is truly a reflection of all the many good, beautiful people I’ve met over the last five years who have included me and seen the best in me and so many of you are here. I am so grateful this morning. I am grateful to reporter Kyle Swenson and photographer Maxine Wallace for seeing me and taking the time to get to know me. And I am grateful for my dear and beautiful and bold coworkers in the little grocery store where I first put the name Jamie and my pronouns on my name tag not too many years ago. They supported me. They laughed at my corny jokes. They defended me. Because of them, I learned to stand tall at cash register number four. And that has made all the difference. It is so scary and hard to open up your life like this, but I decided to do it because I want people to understand that there is no us and them. There is just us. We are all in it together. And if we take the time to get to know each other, I think things can get better. by @jamiemack_blt

My publicist Lucy Von Trapp, who is also my beagle, told me she’s been getting inundated with calls asking if I have been dyeing my hair. Well, friends, I decided to put the rumors to rest and, yes, OK, I did add a touch of red. I just wanted to spice things up a little! And why not? I mean, listen, I won’t go into the details, but I am spreading my wings this summer on stage and off and the last thing I need is more drama so before I have to deal with pesky paparazzi rooting through my trash looking for discarded @revlon Colorsilk boxes, I thought I would put the rumors to rest. Early on in my performing, I would go to @busboysandpoets poetry open mics by myself and each time I told myself I was getting on stage, but I had such a hard time doing it. One night, @ta.niahhh_ and @unphotogentic saw me and just knew I needed a friend. Within minutes, I was sitting at their table, laughing and feeling like I was truly among friends. And I got up and did my thing! What people don’t realize about a moment like that is that when you get such incredible kindness from people you don’t even know, it means so much more than if, say, somebody in your life did something nice for you. It burns so much brighter. And at night, when you go to sleep, that special and beautiful kind of kindness undergoes a chemical process, and it gets turned into courage, and the next thing you know, you are standing tall and shaking things up. Well, last night I was so glad to see and sit with my two friends again, because sometimes it’s good to go back to where it all began and stand tall and find your voice again. So if you ever wanted to try to perform, whether it’s poetry or comedy or a piece of writing or an acting class or anything at all, I promise, if you follow the advice my mom would always give me — shoulders back, she’d say — and take a deep breath and put your best and true yourself out there, not only will you never regret it, you will be so grateful because you will feel that kindness too, and then one day you will want to be that person for somebody else, and that’s what it’s all about, my dears. by @jamiemack_blt

I never could’ve imagined doing stand up comedy in the city where I have lived a lot of life, from games at the Vet with my dad to fortune tellers on South Street who never saw this coming, either, but I can’t wait! And I sure hope some of my S Jersey friends (@gargiule I am talking to you!) can come and see me onstage and shower me with warm and infectious applause and lots of Lorna Doones cookies. by @jamiemack_blt

Life has been throwing a lot at me lately, on stage and off — car wreck injuries, healthcare stuff, a bad back and hurting ribs, and a big comedy club in town that is really starting to fire me up, and worst of all, somebody ate the rest of my Lorna Doones— but I looked in the mirror today and I thought to myself, you badass you got this Jamie.
