With over 800 feet of elevation gain and 5 bridges, essential training must include hill repeats - a lot of hill repeats….come race day….”Hills pay da bills” 🛘🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️💪
Thank you @arunninglifetc @thatcoffeyboy @hchloek for the great pics and vid 🙏

We welcomed the Autumnal Equinox on Tuesday night with speed work with @thenonameprogram in Central Park. Mother Nature flipped a switch and gave us a very welcome crisp cool night. Last night’s 71 minute workout included three 15-minute intervals at paces ranging from 9:15 to 9:30. I run with the 10 min/mi pace group and we always hit much faster paces on speed days. At this point in the training pace groups are expected to be locked in as a unit and that was on display last night with the 10s - strong, controlled, and focused. After weeks and weeks of training together the group gradually locks into a shared cadence, breathing and rhythm - reaching a point where it feels less like a collection of individual runners and more like a cohesive unit moving together. Love this work - love this crew! 💪🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️❤️. Thank you @victorpictureee and Chris for amazing group photos 📸🔥

It was another hot and humid night on the hills in Dumbo, Bk this past Thursday. We spend plenty of time running up and over the hill at various speeds each week, but we often spend 20% of our hill repeats running in reverse - backwards down the hill! But why? There are plenty of benefits from running backwards downhill - also called retro running.

Because you cannot see exactly where you are stepping, running backward downhill forces your nervous system to rely on proprioception—your body’s subconscious awareness of its position in space. This sharpens your overall balance, activates smaller stabilizing muscles in the ankles and feet, and forces a highly upright, athletic posture. Training backward also forces your neuromuscular system to work harder and use up to 30% more energy than forward running at the same speed - this unique cardiovascular and muscular challenge ultimately improves your regular forward running economy, meaning you can run faster while using less oxygen. Love this work…LFG!
Thank you as always coach @arunninglifetc for the videos and photos 📸 🙏

Today was the 45th running of New Balance 5th Avenue Mile and it was a rainy affair, but that didn’t stop some 8,600 people from running the iconic mile long dash down 5th Ave - which starts just south of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and finishes by the famous Plaza Hotel. The race draws international competitors including 15 Olympians and 18 international medalists from 12 different countries and it’s an absolute blast. The race marks the transition from Summer to Fall in NYC and Mother Nature punctuated the day by dumping sheets of rain throughout the entirety of race day but we soaked it up and celebrated that race day energy that only NYC knows how to deliver - New York or Nowhere 💪❤️

Saturday’s long run with @thenonameprogram incorporated two distinct paces - first, 50 minutes of aerobic pace which is is a comfortable, “conversational” moderate-intensity speed where your body uses oxygen to efficiently burn fat and clear lactate. That was followed by another 50 minutes at marathon pace - often described as comfortably uncomfortable - faster than an easy run, but slower and more sustainable than a threshold run. Moving between paces in this way teaches your body to become more efficient at your target speed, using less energy and oxygen when you are tired. It also simulates Late-Race Fatigue - replicating the physical strain of the final miles of a marathon by demanding faster paces after you have already accumulated substantial mileage. Mother Nature threw us a bone by keep temps under 80 degrees with lower humidity (hashbrown: grateful). So happy to catch up with our amazing Coach Julia Lucas @justrunjulia before the run. Thanks as always to @garydeanclarke for the great pics 📸🙏

Hill Repeats!! But why?

Strength: Running uphill forces your glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves to work harder than they do on flat ground.

Speed: Pushing against gravity recruits fast-twitch muscle fibers, which helps you run faster on flat surfaces.

VO2 Max: Hard efforts uphill raise your heart rate and improve your body’s ability to use oxygen.

Form: Inclines naturally force you to lift your knees higher, engage your core, and land on your mid-foot or forefoot.

Lower Impact: Uphill running reduces the heavy pounding and joint stress associated with fast sprinting on flat pavement.

Mental Toughness: This one’s big! Pushing through the burn of a steep incline builds the resilience needed for hard moments in a race - or anywhere for that matter! Find the will - find a hill! 💪

Back in Central Park this past weekend for Grete’s Great Gallop - a 10k full loop of the park celebrating legendary Norwegian marathoner Grete Waitz who won the NYC an unfathomable 9 times between 1978-1988, a record which still stands to this day. She was also the first woman to break a sub 2.5 hr marathon and also won the silver medal at the Olympics - pure inspiration. Saturday’s race marked a return to form for me after 6 weeks of nagging left leg injuries and I tied my fasted 10k for the central park loop - LFG!! 🙌 🏃🏻‍♂️🤘

Threshold pace is strong, controlled, uncomfortable, but manageable. It trains the body to clear lactate and waste products from your blood faster than it accumulates them. This lets you sustain a higher, hard-yet-controlled pace for a much longer time before your muscles fatigue and your performance drops - an essentially part of marathon training. It was another hot and humid night in Central Park but we showed up and showed out! Shoutout to the incredible @thenonameprogram leaders - all volunteers, all best in class 🙏🤘💪.

The Noname Program week 5 speed session took us back to Central Park for 3 tough 15 minute tempo intervals. Hot and humid conditions added to the weight of last night’s effort which was as much a mental workout as it was physical one. We incorporated plenty of hills and rolling terrain and I struggled down the stretch up Cat hill in our final interval but was lifted up by our amazing 10s pace group and our group’s leader @victorpictureee to finish strong. Running is called a single-leg sport because your body spends 100% of its time in motion supported by only one foot at a time, but this community has got your back and supports you every step of the way - Run with who you trust! Grateful 🙏💪❤️

We hit the NYC “Summer Streets” for today’s long run with @thenonameprogram It was hot out there again with temps hitting 90 but we stayed hydrated and kept it nice n steady for 8+ miles. From 7 AM to 3 PM every Saturday in August, over 400 blocks of streets (including Park Avenue and Lafayette Street in Manhattan between 109th Street and Brooklyn Bridge) are open for walkers, runners, and cyclists and closed for motor vehicles - it’s organized chaos out there but inspiration every block! 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃‍♂️🥵🔥🤘Thanks @victorpictureee for the great “King of the Hill pic 📸

Steamy is one way to put it.

You can't control conditions.

You can however,

Decide to show up

And hit the ignition.

A double dose of hill repeats this week with @thenonameprogram with 5+ miles of hills in Central Park and more hot, humid, and hard hills on Thursday in Dumbo lead by local legend @arunninglifetc T’was not joke out there: Hot, Humid, Hard, Hills but we got it done. The NYC Marathon is considered one of the hardest world major marathons due to cumulative elevation gain of over 800 feet, punishing climbs across five major bridges, rolling terrain in the outer boroughs, and a painful late-race uphill slog alongside Central Park. The hill repeats we do today pay big dividends on race day. This work is non-negotiable…LFG! 💪🔥🏃‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️
