VIBE returns to print.

Honored to photograph @asaprocky for the magazine’s first print issue since 2014 — and my first VIBE cover in two decades.

I began part of my own journey within these pages years ago. Good to see the conversation continue.

Harlem in ā€˜95 held a grace that lived between the music and the street.

This moment with D’Angelo in front of Lucky Spot wasn’t staged..it was natural warmth, his openness, his grounding.

Grateful to Miss Rosen for the thoughtful conversation revisiting this era and the experience behind these images.

Some images are captured.
Others are received.

Arms out. Ready to take the whole thing.

I’ve asked for this pose since my father stood in Times Square — my first camera, my first roll of color. Jay. D’Angelo. Nas.
Now Rocky, under the Gowanus.

101.

My father, Sahib Shihab, was born on this day in 1925. Saxophone, flute, baritone.

A New Yorker who went to Chicago as a teenager and cut his teeth in the South Side clubs, then came home and helped shape bebop alongside Monk, Bird, Dizzy, Blakey, Coltrane. Later he crossed the ocean to Copenhagen, where I was born and where his sound became part of mine.

I’ve spent thirty years photographing the culture that grew out of that music. Hip hop is jazz’s grandchild. The line is unbroken — I’ve just been holding the camera.

This year I’d planned to open a chapter called Jazz 101, named for this birthday. About that lineage, and how it gets passed down. The timing shifted. The idea didn’t.

Happy birthday, Pops. Still carrying it forward. by @jamilgshere

A beautiful afternoon celebrating the return of VIBE to print.

Grateful to spend time with the editors, contributors, collectors, and community who helped bring this new chapter to life.

There’s something special about seeing the work leave the screen and exist as a physical object in the world.

Rest in peace John Moore.

I made this work with John while he was Fashion Director of Vibe magazine. It was one of a series of shoots we created together during a formative period when music, fashion, and visual culture were being shaped in real time.

This shoot took place in Jackson, Mississippi — with real people, real locations, and real heat.
I’m sharing these images in tribute to John, and to return the work to its proper context.

The image continues to circulate, as images from that era often do — sometimes detached from the people, publications, collaborations, and cultural conditions that made it possible.

History Machine —

Before the Hall, there was the moment.

Before recognition became institution, there was the image in real time.

Wu-Tang Clan this year. Queen Latifah too.

What stays with me is that earlier charge — when history had not yet settled, but it was already there.

That is the space the archive keeps opening back up. by @jamilgshere
