Art and Experiments-pretty much always wondering why we do things the way we do, learning about plants and rivers, and trying another new medium.

POSTS STORIES REELS

Prof. @jamillewallick invites guests to drop in during her weaving hours for casual conversation, to join in the weaving, and/or to share random objects that may end up in the work. Jamille Wallick is an interdisciplinary artist with a practice rooted in lens-based media, textiles, installation, and performance. You can meet her in the second floor gallery spaces at the Corcoran Flagg building on Thursdays from 10:30am-12:30pm.

For Renegotiation, Jamille is including scrap fabrics, dried ivy, canvas stretchers sourced from listservs and estate sales, quilt scraps and yarns, an unpaired earring, threads from flags left on the street, caution tape, and discarded speaker wire. Wallick invites people to share objects to be woven into the work. “I’d especially love to include other small, narrative objects that sit all around us that have either lost their purpose or never had one.”
– “I’m curious what others might bring to the piece,” says Wallick, “The work itself is meant to be an ongoing conversation. It began with the ivy, I was trying to understand how it might be useful instead of domineering, and curious about my role in that transition. The narrative has continued from there with other materials that had lost or confused purpose in their original environment and they all ended up in my world in random ways. I’m interested in the new story they may write together. It’s rich with metaphors that come together and fall apart during the process.” This work is one part textile–sculpture, and one part public performance.

I am packaging your June snail mail today, thanks for the DMs and support! I had no idea if this was something people would be into, but it has been so fun to get it together.

If you want to get some snail mail post cards to send on to your own friends, please DM me. You can look at my other post on it for more info, but if you can’t afford to pay for it lmk that too. I still want to send you something special because snail mail is the best. 🎉✨✨

I decided I want to include a little hand drawn sketch & note about current interest. I’m currently obsessing over the bee balm everywhere because it is my favorite flower and such a cool herb, so that’s the sketch that will come with your post cards. 😄 by @jamillewallick

Woodblock print carved by time and forest decomposition. I guess I’m tapping into the arts matrilineal history today, particularly the Anna’s- both Mendieta and Atkins for getting some traces of human and plant actions. by @jamillewallick

This work, Wandering With Anxiety, was originally an 18x24” three layer reduction woodcut. Folks visiting the studio really connect with it and are sad it’s sold out, so I had it printed as a small (5x7”) postcard for accessible sharing. You can get one for yourself to keep or to mail as a postcard to a friend. 💌✨

About the print: I had a friend once start a solo band project called “Love your monster”. I think about that phrase a lot and several of my illustrations use monsters to talk about befriending and getting to know your fears, anxieties, and worries-all the pieces of ourselves we tend to run from but have so much to teach us. 👹💙

I’ll be mailing these around the end of June for $8 each, so if you’d like one here’s how to get it:

1. DM your address
2. Venmo me your 8$ @jamille-wallick
3. Get art 💙💌 in the mail

If you would like to add more postcard prints to your envelope, it’s 4$ more for each extra and snail stickers are 0.50$ each or 24 for 10$ by @jamillewallick

Come visit me on Saturday for the Gateway Arts Open Studios! I’m in Pyramid Atlantic 3D. I’ll show you around and you can add to the group collage we started at Hyball last weekend and I’ll show you my recent funny monster painting. Also you can visit like 100 other artists around Hyattsville & Mt Rainer area, and eat delicious food and have delicious coffee. See you then, friends. ✨ check @gatewayost for more info, maps, parking, shuttles, etc

(first photo is by @dillonfmeyer, but I put a filter over it to see the text. Can you believe a photographer would put a filter on someone else’s photo, criminal tbh) by @jamillewallick

Students in time and light at GWU from both my section and from @caremcasey ‘s shared some of their pinhole photos and cyanotype prints in an informal “From the Studio” show. Caroline helped me put up a walk-in camera obscura for students and visitors to better understand the workings of a pinhole camera.
The super cool traffic cone pinhole camera was made by student Ella Rufo and I’m obsessed with how much you can see the camera form, including light leaks, in the resulting round images. The beautiful ghost portraits are by Mira Hsu. The cyanotypes with the gentle, hand-drawn yellow hues are by Leonor Ribeiro who added poetic phrases in the language of place pictured. The shirt is by Charlie Thomajan; it mixes pop references, digital notifications/warnings with cinematic scenes and personal symbolism, exploring both wearing your heart on your sleeve (sorry for my pun, couldn’t resist) and obscuring secret interior experiences. The first video is what you see on the wall when you are inside the obscura. by @jamillewallick

Home for the holidays is so bittersweet when you love the place you aren’t. NC will always be home and goodness I miss all the beautiful people here. Regardless, it’s still full of sweet!!!! 💙

It’s also still wild to confront impacts of Helene that are ongoing a year later. by @jamillewallick

Hey y’all, I’ve got a new iteration of the quilt spiral up in a show right now. It’s a pretty special show for us, it’s not often you get a reunion opportunity like this. A big thanks to Joey Enriquez for curating this show! Opening is tomorrow night from 5:30-8 if you want to come by!

“an unfragile assertion of a fragile possibility

Hope, as a tangible object, is a way of being and becoming. an un-fragile assertion of fragile possibility presents this being and becoming in works made by the MFA in Fine Arts 2020 cohort as we’ve created over the past five years, featuring Caroline Casey, Joey Enríquez, Kamille Jackson, Kevin Kwon, Rhe’a Roland-Singer, Jamille Wallick, Yingying Yang, and Lianna Zaragoza-Marsh. A displacement we didn’t choose, the start of the COVID-19 pandemic overturned the comfortable normalcy of our lives, studies, and practices. This exhibition unites the myriad possibilities latent in the almost diasporic nature of our return to Gallery 102, by which we examine each of our worlds through sculpture, installation, painting, photography, design, and performance.

an un-fragile assertion of fragile possibility provides solutions to problems of landscape, body, identity, belonging, and absence. Sometimes solitary, often vibrant, and always filled with compassion, the objects in this exhibition intertwine where we’ve all ended up as much as where we all started from. We posit that the harmony in our works’ dissonance is a testament of our intense care for each other, as we’ve grown to know that our strength lies in the fragility of our closeness. Above all, we assert that our hope for the present and future is a place where we are united and sated by our struggle in our work together.”

My favorite part of this semester is being back in the dark room. It’s sooooooo quiet and calm ✨ these are mostly test prints from my funny little Brownie. Lots to work out…. by @jamillewallick

This week with my intro photo class we were considering light in Katzen and playing with intentional over/under exposures. Here’s some dramatic light from the few I got to snap during class time. by @jamillewallick
