Kya Baat!! An honour! Thank you @torontolife for recognizing us at #5

Restaurants have always been built on the community of people that uplift them - thank you to the whole team for seeing the vision and working to make magic every single day.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us enough to step through our door and allowed us to take care of them for the evening. Honoured to be sharing the stage with such an exceptional list of chefs, restauranteurs, and friends. taken in West Queen West by @jamils.to

A year and a half in, Jamil's Chaat House already has the thing most restaurants spend a decade chasing: a room where strangers end up at the same table and nobody checks the time. 🙂‍↕️

Jalil Bokhari and Emma Tanaka built that on purpose, starting in the pandemic, when recreating restaurant dishes at home turned into cooking Bokhari's childhood food for friends, then a coffee-shop pop-up that sold out in ninety minutes!

Neither had formal kitchen training. Recipes came from memory, two aunties on YouTube, and phone calls to family.💖

Somewhere between Momofuku, Deloitte, a tasting menu on a patio and a tiny kitchen running on a single induction, they found their own answer to the question of authenticity.🥹

He works the room, she runs the pass, and for now the ambition is simply to show up four nights a week and get a little better each time. 🫂

Jamil’s Chaat House, Toronto, 2024
Design of storefront.

About two years ago Emma and Jalil were working towards opening a brick and mortar restaurant. While they were researching in Lahore, Jalil and I chatted about the architecture of Pakistan; its deep history, myriad influences, and the impact of colonialism, through which, traces of South Asian architectural styles were exported around the world to other British colonies. Informed by the traditional wooden jharokhas and jalis of Lahore, the storefront echoes the eclectic fabric of Toronto architecture and imbues the façade with the character of Pakistani architecture, albeit a contemporary interpolation.

@jamils.to is now well into its second year.

Tasting menu shmasting shmenu it’s actually just the fewest words you can say to get the most amount of food. Low key we won’t even judge you if that’s all you say to us all night - words are hard!!

Designed to allow you to try the majority of our menu in one go. And yes we can also accommodate (most) dietary restrictions. by @jamils.to

Meet our longtime friends of the shop, Jalil and Emma. They’ve been doing amazing things over at Jamil’s, and it’s quickly become one of our go-to spots and top recommendations for anyone coming into town. We asked them what the restaurant means to them and the community it’s a part of:

“Working and hanging around this neighbourhood, it feels really special to have a permanent home exist here. It’s become a base for west end misfit brown kids and beyond - nostalgic for some, something totally new for others. A place to share South Asian food made with local ingredients and drink some fun wine and cocktails. At the end of the day, we hope to foster what can ultimately be another classic Toronto west-end spot” by @jamils.to
