Appreciation post circa August 🚨 I can’t believe I forgot to post these! 🫢 The new center hub to my recording rig.

This is the 8MX2 🔴 from ATI (Audio Toys Inc.) The company that once owned API, and in a twist of audio lore, the API name eventually eclipsed ATI. Some may know ATI from their Paragon audio consoles. This box carries that lineage.

8 mic preamps w/ limiters + 8 channels of analog summing with a stereo mix out > all in one box. ‼️ Insane flexibility, headroom for days and MASSIVE sound.

My end goal was to find a unit that provided maximum mobility and actually gave me a sound that I liked. This was it. ✅ For extra color, I patch in my CAPI transformer boxes when I want it.

**There’s a reason why Taylor Swift had a rack of these on tour for recording live shows.

🚧 Under the Hood 🚧

Considering it’s pushing 50 years old, this Yamaha MC1604 is holding up surprisingly well. Aside from some oxidation on the PCB and a little general cleaning, it’s in solid shape.

It’s packed with original JRC4558 op-amps on the preamp strips. These are famous (or infamous) for their role in the Ibanez Tube Screamer pedal. These gritty op-amps were a product of their time, and have a somewhat loose, slushy response (aka “slow”) it’s either characterful or terrible, depending on who you ask.

The solder job is immaculate. 🔍 💯 👌 And the Group Outs now running CAPI 2503-Litz Output transformers. 🤫

My SX Bass finally got the Leo Quan Badass Bass II Bridge upgrade. I feel like Ralphie describing the Red Ryder BB gun in A Christmas Story. 😆

For the inquisitive minds: The Leo Quan Badass Bridge was invented by a repairman named Glen Quan in the 1970s—pretty cool piece of bass history. The zinc construction improves clarity and sustain and was designed as a direct replacement for Fender-style bridges. It became a favorite among bassists like Geddy Lee of Rush and Marcus Miller.

I snagged this ‘80s version off eBay. Some may call it a placebo effect—to each their own—sounds rad. ✌️

Had an incredible time playing with the Lindsey-Huff Band this past weekend alongside Bronson Arroyo and his crew at the Washington Opera House for the David Iery Foundation’s ‘Chords for Cords’ event.

🥁 A moment for the kit: Huge thanks to @dave.becknell.9 for letting me use his stunning Tama STAR Bubinga kit. With 10” and 12” rack toms, 14” and 16” floor toms, and a 22” kick, this kit is a BEAST! All the attack, beef, and projection you could ever want. A BEAUT! 👌

🚨 What is this?! 🚨 The endless pursuit of guitar tone. To swap out the 15” stock speaker in my amp for a 10” Celestion G-10 Alnico Gold, a step-down baffle is needed. Big thanks to AK Audio for coming through and hooking it up! 🤝 The simple things.
