“Herencia Compartida”

Meaning Shared heritage.

After my trip to San José, I wanted to use the patterns from our sewing lessons to create a few pieces that told more of the story of my experience. The women in my class showed such pride and emotion in realizing they had learned a skill that could be passed down for generations. I wanted these pieces to reflect that feeling of tradition, creativity, and shared knowledge.

I couldn’t have imagined someone more poised and composed to bring them to life than our incredible model, @ashley_dianna04 .

These simple designs were elevated by the brilliant @tanner_kalin . Thank you for bringing your eye and creativity to this project.

@dwellstudiosphx , thank you for hosting us and helping bring my vision to life.

This summer, my grandmother’s church paired with Dress a Girl Around the World to bring clothes to young girls in Costa Rica. In addition, the group taught sewing lessons and provided pattern books and machines so that women of multiple generations could pass down this skill. The “mission” was to give women and their families a trade that could bring both income at the markets and a more secure, self-sufficient life.

I went as prepared as I could, with my 10 sewing patterns memorized and ready to teach in Spanish. I was so worried about the technical components of this trip, as I’d been applying for it for two years, but during this adventure, none of that seemed to matter. It felt like I was witnessing something far more profound than just sewing unfold.
