Mya Cash,

When we first began talking, you offhandedly mentioned that you had just become Miss Lane County. I didn't understand what that meant, and at the time, neither did you. You were bombarded by attention, responsibility, and an overwhelming pressure to change, to succumb to the image of what each person thinks Miss Oregon should be like.

But as we got to know each other, I realized that you are deeply compassionate, a defender of the needy and the innocent, a faithful follower of the Lord. Your desire was evident - not to change, but to grow. As you attempted to fill the hefty shoes of Miss Oregon, you didn't change, you simply were true to yourself, in growth and in your devotion to others.

Mya, you are my rock. You keep me bolted to the ground. Your humor, class, and groundedness shines so brightly in a world of dull greys. I see that more than anyone. That is why you have been such a good leader to the girls in the Miss America Organization, and you will be an amazing mentor to all the girls who will inevitably look up to you in the future.

As you give up your title of Miss Oregon and move into the next stage of your life, I am so excited for what God has in store for you. Hand in hand, growing together in truth, peaks and valleys with full trust in the Lord. I'm so excited to be able to spend more time with you, and I'm sure Larry is meowing at the thought as well.

I love you endlessly, and I can't wait to see the impact in lives of your wonderful reign for years to come.

Love, Jay by @myaeleanorcash

I've been playing in Church since 8 - I don't just play Jazz! Here's me rockin' out in the drum cage.

2 days from graduation. It's been a long journey, and I have 2 very especially important mentors, @reetzonthebeetz and @anthonyhatzel, who really shaped me out of clay. I would not be here right now without them.

I'll be sticking around Eugene, Music Directing at New Hope and for Generations, playing gigs, teaching at MPAC, and who knows what else. Hopefully, you'll see me around. taken in newhope.west by @myaeleanorcash

I had the pleasure of playing on my good friend and marvelous musician, @martin_luther_vandross’s, @uojazz senior recital this weekend! I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him this year, so I was thrilled to be a part of this show. This clip is my solo on “Seven Steps to Heaven” by Victor Feldman (made famous by @milesdavis) with @jamminveach, @mrlukehendrickson, @robsdailycomps, and @jdjguitar. #jazz #saxophone #jazzsaxophone #jazzstandard #milesdavis #livemusic #livejazz #eugene #shotoniphone by @myaeleanorcash

Here's a solo I took over @stefonharrismusic 's arrangement of Horace Silver's Cape Verdean Blues last night! It's been such a blast hanging out with such an inspiring educator as Stefon, and what a great way to end my last seasonal big band concert at the UO.

I will be starting to post again in June as it's been more than a year since my last post, and I've changed a lot. taken in Beall Concert Hall by @myaeleanorcash

Standards with Jay #2 - There Will Never Be Another You

This series involves me learning to play and sing Jazz standards at the same time (really racking my brain to remember the lyrics in this one). Did some improv as well, but I'm hoping to start to integrate more comping even when singing. by @myaeleanorcash

"Off With Your Socks" - 2/22/24 🎧
Written by Scott Jonathan Dinsfriend

Here is a piece written by the brilliant composer and multi-instrumentalist S.J. Dinsfriend (conducting here), played during his Doctorate recital. It's certainly the most intellectually challenging and rewarding music I've played in a long while, and I'm excited to see where his career goes. taken in UO Beall Concert Hall by @myaeleanorcash

"Sidetracking" - 2/16/24
Trumpet: Cyrus Nabipoor
Alto: Ryan Helms
Piano: Ryan Hirth
Guitar: Eric Deaton
Drums: Jay Veach

It's been over a year since my last post. During this while, I've been doing well. Shedding, teaching, all that Jazz.

I've grown as a person over time - or I'd like to believe that. I've certainly started to distinguish what I actually like/dislike rather than following the path of least resistance. The questions and concepts I thought were crucial to my concept of reality are... as I'm finding out, insignificant. And that's alright with me. taken in The Jazz Station by @myaeleanorcash
