During a walk last spring, I told my dear friend Tina about belongings from my past that had resurfaced. Belongings that had faded into oblivion and, because of the complexity of my childhood and my relationship with my mother, had been kept there for eleven years. When Tina suggested making a documentary about it, it felt like an opening to finally drive out there and see what those belongings actually were. Something I couldn’t find the strength to do on my own, and could have easily postpone until the next month.

In this podcast, we share a small glimpse into how I’m searching for possible ways to see my mother in a softer light. By doing so, it also makes me look back at a period marked by a lot of pain, grief, and shame. It feels vulnerable to open this up, since it’s a personal part of my life that I share very little about outside my close circle or people I deeply connect with. At the same time, it’s not a secret, and it says a lot about our society: how it’s set up or, actually, isn’t, for people who don’t have a social and/or financial safety net, and what the consequences of that can be.

Thank you so much dear Tina, incredibly proud on how you captured this and grateful to have done this with you🫂

Omzwervingen is a documentary by Tina Priemus, made during the Oorzaken Podcast Academy, with support from the NPO Fund. available to listen to everywhere, in dutch.
