Founded in 1891, Delaware State University has spent more than a century building a legacy rooted in education, opportunity, leadership, and community.

Established as the State College for Colored Students, the institution was created during a time when access to higher education was severely limited for Black Americans. From its earliest days, Delaware State represented more than a place to earn a degree. It became a place where generations of students could pursue knowledge, develop their talents, and prepare to lead within their communities and beyond.

Over the decades, the university evolved alongside the changing landscape of American higher education. In 1947, the institution became Delaware State College, reflecting its continued growth and expanding academic mission. In 1993, it officially became Delaware State University.

Today, Delaware State University is one of the nation's historically Black colleges and universities and a comprehensive public university serving students across a wide range of disciplines. Its legacy continues through its students, alumni, faculty, and traditions, carrying forward a history that began more than 130 years ago.

The story of Delaware State is a story of perseverance, progress, and the enduring importance of creating opportunities through education.
