Still flashed from Sunday‘s race 💫

Those around know that this journey wasn‘t without doubts and challenges.

Doubts on where the move to the Netherlands would take my running. Leaving Berlin behind, where I had found back into running competitively with @berlintrackclub & started the Marathon adventure with @coach.schalanda - where I‘ve put so much heart and soul in evolving our little club on the board, ran with my friends every day and where I gained so much wisdom through the world‘s best physio @_rogue_____ @theroga_physiotherapy

Starting out new is scary. And a lot. Especially when crossing borders. It‘s been an intense few months between finding a place - and moving from the big city to a village.. kind of accidentally - painting walls post work in a busy new job, I initially had no idea of.. figuring out how to get flooring for the house - wtf? - making this a home while working through a million administrative things.. Graf Eugen finding a new Job.. and me finding a new training group …and eventually even buying an electric car…

Berlin, you were amazing!!
Thank you to everyone who came out to support yesterday - you carried us along 🥳🥳🥳

Happy about a shiny new PB ✨2:32:40✨

Damn, it‘s been a vey tough ride throughout the last 7K, but happy to bring it to the finish line 🏁 on the home course and take in the rewards of those 3 special months.

Special shoutout to superstar pacer @bjoern_tro for the clock work on the first 30K and @coach.schalanda for the race plan and believing in me. True teamwork.

Thank you for crossing fingers, following along and all the sweet, kind, motivating and supportive messages. This gives me so much motivation to follow my dreams.

Congrats to all the Marathoners. So inspiring to see what all of you did out there and especially proud of all my teammates @berlintrackclub

Hamburg Marathon // 42,195KM // 2:34:28h // Top 10 Finish // 3rd German

Still processing the race and slowly realizing. I am not understating when saying I had a lot of respect for the distance heading into @haspamarathonhamburg

When I was younger people often told me I could be a good Marathon runner one day, but after graduating from College and entering work life reality, running moved more and more into the backseat.

It always gnawed on me watching all those races from the outside, being excited about Marathon running but never approaching the distance myself on a level reflecting my PBs on the distances below. Being so far away from those in regards to fitness and years passed, there were moments where I thought this opportunity is forever gone.

Yesterday I fulfilled myself a dream getting after it on the Marathon distance with a finishing time I didn’t dare to imagine in the past years. And yes, I lost some ground on the last 5K - but this is part of the Marathon experience I guess.

(PS: They probably take pics at KM 38 to display true Marathon emotions - greatly captured my slowest KM 😉 - but it’s fun, I swear ✌️)

KM 32 💬“only two times Spanderswoud loop“, 💭“ok, I can can do this“

KM 35 - another great split. A bit surprised as I wasn‘t so sure what I was feeling anymore.

Onto the next 5 💬 “and this time we‘re breaking this part“ - the pain train was real, but committed to follow along.

💬„We‘re in this together“ - probably the most powerful words throughout the race.

Didn‘t see @flobeckrunner in the race behind my shield but heard him cheering 💛

I thought about coach @markhilberts who told me on the last proper Marathon session „nobody wants to run anymore in this part. This is where you have to push“. Ok coach!

The energy in the city got louder. Spotting him at KM37 shouting to push through now.

🗯️„Come-on 4 more KM and then you can lie down“

Passing by a stage playing the German song „Wackelkontakt“ 💡- the boys got excited that „this can‘t be co-incidence“ - a painful smile on my face I guess.

For a moment the boys were a couple meters further away when a wind bow came my way. I was about to scream - wait for me 😅.

KM 40 - no exact split time but rather 💬 „we‘re still doing good on time“, the thought crossed my mind that we‘ve been slowing down as he would have mentionned the time otherwise (In hindsight I know - we only did a tiny bit)

Last fueling station 💬 „Fuck it. Take a sip and throw away“

2K to go.. really digging deep, but at this stage I was pretty sure I am going to make it.

1K to go 🗯️„let‘s go - it‘s going to be 2:31“
💭ah we are really still fully on track? I glimpsed on my watch a second time in the race - now knowing, but incapable of doing any math at this point.

800m to go sign 🗯️ „two more laps on the track“

500m to go .. 💭“lovely sign but still can‘t see the finish line“

And then finally. We turn around the corner and the finish line is in sight.

My thoughts were somewhere between 💭“ouhh wow this is almost Sub 2:31“, „ouff finally release“ and „this is already the end? We made it? We already ran 42KM?“

Even then @runningnoof delivers and tells me to „make sure to enjoy. This is your day and PB“. So for once, there is a smiling finish line pic 😃.

And celebrating together makes it so much sweeter 🥲

It was sunny on the course, so they handed out cold sponges - @runningnoof asked me 3 times on whether i‘d want one - me denying each time. The 4th time he insisted a bit more „i am not forcing you, but I really recommend it. You will notice too late“ so I followed his advice.

Clocking 25K. Another confirmation of a good split. Him mentionning that he will ask now and at 30 if I want to pick-up the pace - I shook my head. I was fine, but not on flightmode and the coach wanted consistency until at least 30.

On another turn - hearing about @jonatan_venema struggling. Moving the info aside, focussing on myself.

Getting onto Erasmusbridge back to the center @runningnoof reminded me once more to take it easy uphill and controlled breathing downhill.

Moving towards KM 30. Passing more runners and moving up in placing. @runningnoof reminding me to soak in the energy of the crowds. And to run close to them for wind protection.

Rotterdam not really being home turf, I didn‘t see many familiar faces along the course. Well.. looked like I had the support with me on the course and in addition his friends were instructed to cheer for me in German (Zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe 🪰).

Moving up in rank. When we pass another woman with the voiceover „If it get‘s hard think about this - this is really hard“, I felt bad for her.

Running into @jonatan_venema - who already had a coffee chat inbetween and waited for us.

Inspired by him showing true character to continue with us despite personal disappointment, we went onto the last 12K.

KM 30 - another great split. Again declining to pick-up pace.

While @runningnoof & @jonatan_venema had casual conversations the race got harder for me.

When @jonatan_venema ignited the party animating the crowds, was eager for me to chase down more competitors and wrung out a sponge over my head twice, @runningnoof was making sure that the young & wild spirit did not mess up the rythm to be able to finish strong. I loved the combination.

Race Day 🌪️

It’s always a surreal feeling when it’s finally go-time.

We lined up with a quick “let’s do this 🙌”

First meters up on Erasmusbridge - as steep as it can get in the Netherlands.

It‘s been windy, so imediately started hiding behind @runningnoof - the pace felt easy, I was wondering if we‘re fast enough. He had called out before that he needs 1K to figure it out and promised to be on pace by then. So I just relaxed and enjoyed the atmosphere knowing that this will get harder.

Got stitches on the first 3-4K‘s - the beauty of experience is, that you know, you‘ll ..probably be fine.

First 5k split - @runningnoof confirming that we’re perfectly clocking - minimal faster than the intended split.

First fueling station - focus on getting it all in, supervised by @runningnoof who made sure we don‘t press on pace during each of these stations.

On the first 10K - many runners notice the pace bib and ask what we‘re going for. @runningnoof confidently repeating 2:31 every time. Me hoping that the question can be answered similarly later in the race.

Many of them passing by. Him confirming that we are perfectly fine and that we will see some of them again.

10K - another perfect split.
On the turnarounds we see @jonatan_venema going fassst and @martijnkornet cheering for us.

Another perfect split at 15. I wasn‘t flying, I wasn‘t hurting - but I did think it might become a long race, not feeling as easy as I‘d liked to.

Some windy straights. Graf Eugen asked in hindsight who the other guy pacing was - i had no idea. @runningnoof kept acquiring support when it got windy. Grateful for the guys who joined the journey for a bit. Of course he was also foreseeing when to expect tailwind again.

KM 19 - seeing Graf Eugen for the first time bringing a smile on my face, KM 20 again cheering in his finest Dutch and @runningnoof talking about something like the next 22K being fine if running on the power of love. Not sure if it was this or something else where he apologized immediately remembering the „no laughing rule“.

Half Marathon - blinking on my watch for the very first time 1:15:36 - a few seconds faster than plan, a perfect split.
