JANDAL1001LIVE - BIKES IN SPACE - Live at Somethin' Else 2026 - out now on Bandcamp!

Jonathan Crayford and Joe Kaptein introduce their project Bikes In Space, an electronic vintage keyboards and drums driven fully improvised psychedelic groove space junk ensemble that sounds like what it might be like to be in the brain of Philip K Dick, Ursula Le Guin or Margaret St Clair - except more. Maybe a sonic smoothie of certain elements of Silver Apples, Can, Weather Report, Andy Kaufman, and Rodney Dangerfield. Decide for yourself.

Each and every Bikes In Space gig is a plunge into the unknown, enhanced and elevated by the exciting unpredictability of a different drummer for each performance. This unedited, instantaneously composed set was recorded live at the Aotea Centre, in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, with Chris O'Connor @djguestspeaker featuring on the drums on this occasion. It was captured on stereo room mics, to accurately transport any future listeners straight back to the moment of the gig - and was described by audience members on the day as various things from "magical" to "a mindfuck".

Bikes In Space have a forthcoming album out on LP/digital later in 2026 on Jandal Records, a hybrid live album featuring a selection of performances and instant compositions from gigs across 2025-2026. Stay tuned.

SWIPE for some snippet samples ......

Jonathan Crayford - Rhodes, Bullfrog, Muse, Grandmother
Joe Kaptein - Rhodes, Pianet, Clavinet, Mellotron, CS-5
Chris O'Connor - drums and cymbals

Recorded by @jocrayford and @joekaptein
Mastered by @andrewisdale
Cover design by Joe Kaptein.
Photography by Frances Chan.

Performed, composed and recorded 6th Feb at Aotea Square as part of the Somethin' Else Jazz Festival 2026. Thanks to Nathan Graves and Hudge. by @jandal.records

JANDAL 001 OUT NOW / JOE KAPTEIN + POOL SHARKS

New album out today! Stoked to have it out in the world, as the debut release on my brand new label @jandal.records - go wrap your ears around it on Bandcamp, or grab an LP from any good record store today.

POOL SHARKS is the band and POOL SHARKS is the album. This set is a pretty calm, swampy, blissed out batch of compositions, brought to life by the players on the record - @andrewisdale on sax - also mixed the whole thing!!!! and @sonofafritsch on bass clarinet, the mighty @wilgoodinson and @davidjoelharris holding it down in the rhythm section, @ben.frater on epic percussion rigs, and @finn_scholes for hooning on one tune called 'Herb Alpert'. I also jammed a variety of keyboards, synths, guitars, glocks etc.

It is always cool hearing the tunes evolve as they are interpreted by the players - most of these tunes were intentionally written with the Pool Sharks players/ensemble in mind, but once we started workshopping them in the studio they would evolve even further. For example 'Five Stone Sourdough' started life as a much faster jam called 'Ten Pound Panini', until it was decided a much slower tempo was worth exploring more, until it wound down to the slow, languid version which made it on the album - and this set the tone for the final selections on the LP - slow, dreamy yet groovin. Pleasure to create music with creative company! @ccrystal.chen took some majestic photos from around the Waikato which ended up being perfect visual companion to the music. @downbeatmastering again with the final layer of mastering magic.

Come to the gigs too - the band will play the album in full next week plus some more unreleased cuts from the session - Thursday 9th and Friday 10th October, two nights stand, maybe for the only time ever, at The Apartment - a cool intimate immersive little venue on KRd with @fromthenoisefloor making us sound all good. Jandal tote bags available too. Tickets from Undertheradar!

The record is a limited hand numbered run of 300 - get em before they're gone. One-off pressing. JANDAL002 not far away either. Follow @jandal.records for updates. Anyways hope you enjoy this album. Happy Friday by @jandal.records

New release - JOE KAPTEIN + POOL SHARKS - JANDAL 001 - out Oct 3rd on LP and digital on @jandal.records - fresh album! Fresh label!

Stoked to announce this. The first single "Sleepy Space Cadet" is out today on Bandcamp, Tidal and all the usual places. Check the link in my bio. Pool Sharks is the band, and Pool Sharks is also the album.

Here's an album of mostly mellow, languid, swampy tunes I cooked up over the last year or so, with contributions from many hombres.... @andrewisdale plays saxophones and engineered and mixed the whole thing! @ben.frater plays a huge assortment percussive sounds, @wilgoodinson and @davidjoelharris held it down in the rhythm section department, @sonofafritsch purrs away on bass clarinet, @finn_scholes hoons trumpet on one song, - I played the rest of the keys/organs/synths/guitars etc. @downbeatmastering got it sounding crispy and @ccrystal.chen got some mint cover photos. Shot legends

This is the also first release on my new label Jandal Records which aims to present interesting music from Aotearoa (and beyond!), with a focus on limited edition vinyl runs - this one is available to pre-order now through Bandcamp, with a limited hand-numbered run of 300 currently in production. There's a whole lot more on the boil currently, so make sure to give @jandal.records a follow on here and on Bandcamp!

We are doing a couple of gigs next month on K Road on the 9th and 10th of October too, come along to these and grab an LP and hear the music, looking forward to exploring these songs in a live environment... Tix available now from Undertheradar, get em before they're gone, link in bio again

Anyway there's one tune out now for you to wrap your ears around! Pre-save the album digitally to please the algorithmic gods if that's your thing...or experience it in a real dimension and pre-order the vinyl LP now. Peace taken in EARTH by @jandal.records
