had such a 🔥🔥🔥 few days last week, bending glass in a neon studio out in San Francisco! Learned so so much and fell further in love with this medium (didn’t know I had space to love it more! My fascination only deepens!)
Super grateful to the knowledgeable and badass artist who was teaching me, Meryl Pataky. Meryl generously champions access to neon education through an organization she co-owns, called She Bends. (Check ‘em out!)
Back in ATL now, with lots of momentum and ready to keep working with this medium that stuns me with both its softness and its strength.

This Sunday!
We’re so honored to play Mainline Music festival this year. So grateful to have a music publication like mainline that puts the strange and exciting things we’re up to in the Atlanta music scene into words, builds community and supports artists however they can.

From Mainline (and some words by Drew Kirby):

Feltie calls itself a “cosmic folk collective.” Built around Atlanta songwriter Abby Gregg, Feltie brings together Taber Lathrop, Jason Bronson of Floral Portrait, interdisciplinary artist Jane Foley (whose role onstage never has them playing the same instrument twice), and Jack Blauvelt on drums, bells, and, occasionally, whistles.

The result is folk music that feels genuinely communal: loose, curious, a little strange, and more interested in asking questions than pretending to have all the answers. Old-school folk and country sit alongside the more atypical edges of indie songwriting, with Gregg’s songs leaving plenty of room for the rest of the collective to wander around inside them.

Feltie released their debut album, ‘Cloud Songs,’ via Marching Banana late last year, and they already have a follow-up on the way.

See Feltie at #mainlinemusicfest on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Thinking Man Tavern.

As we lead up to the opening reception of BODYFLUID, here’s a peek at some of the work.

@jane_g_f The Slip is a glass shape filled with soft orange-ish light, with a small curtain of chains dangling from its lowest point. Another chain,  woven to hold a shape, simply reads “gay”, underscored by a dangling nipple clamp chain. Neon light is a historic and classic visual marker of queer clubs and dungeons. In this show, the lit shape subtly converts an area of the gallery to a night-life scene. The Slip attempts to collaborate with nearby works in the show, situating often-hidden imagery of queer sexuality and cruising culture within its warm illumination.

Opening Reception Aug 15,  2-5pm

just feeling really LIT by many art and music and performance things that I have been able to be a part of lately. (more on those soon)
This has been one of the busiest and most lovely months of art-making of my whole life and sometimes I used to think that feeling of ~salad days~ ~big art freedom~ was behind me. But it’s here. And it’s out there ahead too—-it can be anywhere.
sending love to all the collaborators and organizers and pals around me that I am navigating this time with—— thank you for all you do.
Srry not srry that I’m a big softie in the midst

made this small sculpture for a dear friend who I haven’t seen in too long, taped it to the inside of a cardboard box, mailed it in the regular mail from ATL, and it arrived, working just fine in Montreal ✨
it’s glass neon tube (filled with argon for the white glow), nylon mesh, and cement ✨
this disco blink is an accidental state I found by turning a dimmer plug down very low. it’s usually steady on, but capable of dimming and flashing ✨ by @jane_g_f

de-install today at MOCA GA ✨
It’s a little nostalgic sure, but mostly practical. Today I like this part, taking everything down and touching it all again one by one.

This is Tissue Thin Passage. When making this sort of neon room, I was thinking about accumulation, and gathering together materials that have disparate histories. I wanted to stand inside that (literally) to see what it felt like. Most of these neons were salvaged from a trash pile when I bought some old used neon glass flameworking tools in rural Alabama. They had hung in the air in neon signs around middle Alabama for decades that were now torn down. A few of the neons are glass that I bent to respond to things I saw (I made a neon arch that is a mirror image of another salvaged arch, a stair-step shape thinking of pipes under stairs and also pipe organs). There was a lot of play and freedom in the way I put these onto the structure —- the process felt a bit like drawing. Just looking and adding and looking and adding. The steel structure itself is an accumulation—- from a project I started back in 2017 with Ruth Stanford but we never finished because of lost funding. Also destined for the scrap heap but here resurrected. The steel frame part was all made by hand—- steel was cut back then by me and Ruth, welded by me, with just lots and lots of sweat and time.

In the end, it was such a lovely experience to stand in here with friends, to see your pictures you sent me of kids playing in here, to tell me about conversations you had, which angles you preferred over others. What a lucky little neon skeleton shed! I hope I get to remake this again somewhere, it feels like something that could continue. Thank you all for visiting and for being so curious and kind ! ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ by @jane_g_f

Join us TONIGHT, Thursday, July 18th at 7 PM for an Artist Talk with Jane Foley! ‘The Gentle Empty’ is on view through August 3rd.

“Each work often takes several broken versions to create one where the glass stays intact. There are moments where grief and damage move through these media, as well as cycles of repair and resilience. When complete, these forms, squeezed and wrapped by neons and dried in my hands, bear marks of the support and touch required to make them. The resulting sculptures’ hard and soft qualities, appearing both liquid and solid, are poetically thick with parallels to gender fluidity and the precariousness of “passing” as a queer person, existing as both and neither of the binary states, but rather something else outside them.”

Image: ‘cease fire on each and every tongue cease fire breathed into every corner of every home cease fire from the river to the sea and back again cease fire until those who should know peace can know peace cease fire may we know that all people are sacred and equally worthy of life cease fire may the war machines sit fallow until they choke with rust cease fire on each and every tongue’, 2024, concrete, wire, argon and mercury in neon glass tube, neon
