Oh, hello there! If you’re new around here, my name is Jane Johnson. I’m on a mission to redefine the way we do Quiet Time, one woman at a time. How? By giving women the proper framework for a daily Scripture study that allows for more critical thinking and less spoonfeeding. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m here just trying to explain that I’m doing things differently now, that I’m committed to a different routine, that I’m working toward Bible-fluency rather than Bible-study-dependence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m teaching women just like you how to prioritize the sometimes-awkward-feeling digging for Scripture treasures and learning to recognize the voice of God in her life over the ones handed to her and provided for her, written by a woman who knows God’s voice in hers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As they say in the world of newborns, it doesn’t matter how you feed your baby – fed is best. I’m taking that same approach here, giving a high-five to the women who prefer the pre-written studies as I keep swimming along upstream from them. I’ve been sitting on this for months, the story much too tender to share, until this last week, when God finally whispered, “Now” and I finally felt ready. This is part of a longer piece that you can find on my blog, but the gist of it all is that something powerful shifts inside of you when you change the language that you use to describe your circumstances. For me? That means that every time I’m overwhelmed and want to cry aloud to nobody in particular, “This is so HARD.” I need to shift my words. Because it’s all wildly holy ground. And when I call my hard things holy, as God sees them, the weight of it all shifts off of me and onto Him. I’m still working in this. I haven’t perfected it yet, and I still find myself wanting to say that “h” word. But, WOW the shift that happens in my spirit when I interrupt myself and say, “God, this is SO HOLY.” Try it for yourself. There aren’t really words for what it does. But it shifts something that I cannot see. And, at least for today, I can manage. by @jane_johnson

I haven’t done a Bible study in six years. I’ve been too busy studying the Bible. This is exactly what I do every morning instead: - Read the passage from my reading plan or from where I left off yesterday. - Cross-reference, letting the Bible explain itself first. - Word-dig into the original language on the phrases that tug my curiosity. - Look at commentaries (after I’ve finished my own digging and only if I want more). - Turn it all into prayer. Some mornings I do all five. Others, I get lost in the linguistics alone. But EVERY morning is Spirit-led, regardless of the steps I complete. I’ve been teaching this exact morning-digging routine to women just like you for over a decade (and I’ve built it into WORTHY to help you do the same thing on your own). We booked a last minute trip to Maui on a whim five days before we flew out to squeeze out every last second of summer that we could. But it was more than just a quick trip or a visit home. It was revisiting a place where God moved in ways that have forever changed me. I cried when we landed, the movie reel of miracles and deep heart healing God did here flashing through my mind in vivid color. And I cried when we left again four nights later. I was eight years into our wait for a family when we moved here, 36 weeks pregnant with Jonathan when we left. And last weekend we returned to one of my favorite beaches to photograph sunset memories for families I’d never met back in my days as a portrait photographer. Only this time, my family was the subject. I’m a decade removed from our first miracle and I’m still not over it all. And I never, ever will be. @loveandwater thanks so much for offering to shoot when I asked to borrow a tripod. This session was everything I didn’t know I needed. by @jane_johnson

It’s been a week since we celebrated the release of #theworthycommentary and the hard launch of the Dig Your Well® brand and the one moment that will sit with me forever? It’s when I glanced over from my makeshift stage and caught sight of my 9-year-old. His hands were in his pockets, his eyes were lit up, and he was locked in. I told my husband later that it was as if I was watching the lightbulb of comprehension flick on for him - all those early mornings that he came downstairs to find me at the kitchen table with my Bible and laptop open, all those afternoon quiet times that he came to ask a question and found me at my desk. He put it all together in that moment and realized that it was building something. I am viscerally aware that my kids’ childhood stories are a parallel ride to the birth of all of this and I have long prayed that they see the deep heart-work that God is carving out in me - that I’m not just their Mom who teaches women about Jesus. I pray that I’m their Mom who teaches them to hear God’s voice and love His Word just as much as I do. When I was done speaking, my crew of people surrounded my family and prayed over me, my calling, this ministry. And, after that? Jordan wandered over to the shelf, picked up a copy of Worthy, and began to read. A short while later, Rinnah slipped a book in front of me. Josh told her to ask me with sign it with a twinkle in his eye. “Rinnah-Roo,” I wrote on the dedication page, “this is your legacy.” Two nights later, at bedtime, I went to do tuck-ins and both boys were already tucked up in their beds reading their own copies of Mercy Like Morning that they also picked up at the party, reading for themselves the story of my agonizing, decade-long wait to finally get to be their mom. I didn’t expect to see it so soon, but I see it already - the fruit of all of this, the living out of this intentionally and prayerfully assigned ministry tagline that explains the why of it all. And I will keep digging my well until the day that I die. For me. For them. And for anyone who comes across these squares, these books, this space, feeling a little thirsty, and stops for a drink. All this? It’s just the beginning. by @jane_johnson

I will NEVER get over stories like these—the way God uses the very words He had me string into sentences to wind their way around the nuanced and deeply personal experiences of women, leaving them feeling seen by Him, known by Him, and unmistakably loved.
