Jane Benson | “her her”

October 30 – December 5, 2026

her her debuts a major new series of monumental, mixed-media works by acclaimed conceptual artist Jane Benson. Benson’s acclaimed practice spans drawing, sound, new media, and sculpture, often appropriating and unraveling existing literature, artwork, or objects. her her features a new series of text-based drawings that reconfigure Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein into a lyrical exploration of womanhood and rage. Particularly urgent in the current moment, the work fragments and distorts legibility yet amplifies Shelley’s personal voice.

And thank you Molly Murray for an incredible essay that accompanies the show.

Out of this world to see this today. Thank you @tmagazine for introducing my weird nocturnal habits to the world, along with the amazing Wendell Pierce, Ann Craven, Quang “Q” Nguyen, Amanda Perdomo and Kenny Rivero, in this wonderful and revealing article by Ligaya Mishan @ligayamishan (link above)

Thanks to Coco Romack @cocoromack for the great conversation and for translating my story, and Richard Barnes @richardbarnes for the sensational photography. And Patrick Li @patrickli__ for his creative direction, it was quite a night! And sarah_goulet for the seemless communication.

excerpt from New York Is Getting Sleepier. These Artists Are Wide Awake:

I rise every day at 4 a.m. and work up there until about a quarter to 7. After that, I usually have to get everyone up, including my husband. Those three-ish hours are everything to me. There’s almost no sound, just the odd beep of a car, the sporadic roar of a garbage truck. But the main thing is that no one’s spoken to me, and I haven’t had to respond.

Before I do anything, I make a cup of tea with two bags so that it’s really strong. My work is multidisciplinary in nature. It involves sound, sculpture, digital print and drawing; there are many facets to be thought about and combined. Right now, I’m working with the six chapters in Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” (1818) that are narrated by the so-called creature, who I actually believe is the voice of Mary herself. I’m removing all of the text from one chapter, apart from places where the syllables of solfège [“do,” “re,” “mi,” “fa,” etc.] appear, and then will work with the mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn to perform the resulting score. In the early morning, these fragments of sentences fall away between the notes that I’m locating, and I piece them together into bits of lyric prose. That time and silence allow my subconscious to be in charge. taken in New York Times by @janebensonstudio

An exhibition of artworks that formally and conceptually investigate maps, borders, directional systems, and distances will be on view at Paula Cooper Gallery from July 8–August 8, 2025. In a time of heightened violence at geographical borders and boundaries, along with challenges to sovereignty and statehood around the world, the visual language of cartography is increasingly politicized. Dating from the early 1960s to the present day, the works in the exhibition question the presumed objectivity of cartographic conventions.

JANE BENSON
Family Portrait (3)
2015
Hand-cut and woven flag
152.4 × 91.4 cm

In an era where families are scattered across the globe, Jane Benson reinvents the iconography of family.
In Family Portrait (3), national flags from Iraq, Bahrain, Germany, Norway, UAE, USA, Turkey, and China are hand-cut and woven together — merging identities, displacing borders, and reflecting the reality of diasporic lives. 🌍✨

Rather than erasing difference, Benson’s meticulously woven works offer a visual map of evolving global affiliations — neither utopian nor dystopian, but an honest portrait of a world in constant flux.

➤Jane Benson works in various media such as installation, sculpture, drawing, video, music and literature, which she often interweaves in very idiosyncratic ways. Her works deal with destruction and loss, but also discover hidden (aesthetic) potential and possibilities of healing in the damage. This principle affects physical materials as well as aesthetic identities. She has exhibited at national and internationally venues, including MoMA PS1 Sculpture Center, Long Island City, New York;Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia or Kunsthalle Emden. Recent solo exhibitions have taken place at Paula Cooper Gallery, Palm Beach Florida; Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany; and Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati.

Flat Planter III (Flourescent
Yellow)
2022
powder coated water jet cut
aluminium
90 × 46 × 5 cm

🌱In Flat Planter, Jane Benson transforms artificial plants by cutting their leaves into sharp geometric shapes, disrupting their illusion of nature. By fragmenting the fake, she gives it individuality — turning mass-produced décor into something strangely authentic. The work playfully scales this idea up, nodding to the rise of garden walls in eco-architecture.

Mirror Globe (Mapping the New World), 2012

Permanent public artwork commissioned by the NYC Department of Education and the NYC School Construction Authority Public Art for Public Schools Program, in collaboration with the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program.

Mirror Globe (Mapping the New World), 2012 is a world map installation located on the outside wall of the auditorium, visible from both inside and outside the school building through the windows along the entrance plaza. Two large oval forms representing the Eastern and Western hemispheres are framed by steel bands inscribed with measurements of latitude and longitude. Most remarkable, however, are the 30,000 mirror pieces that cover the hemispheres, reflecting the surrounding space and capturing the image of each individual passing by both inside and outside. Viewers are invited to interact with the mirrors; stopping in front to observe themselves and their surroundings; momentarily allowing them to become part of the artwork. As they move along the piece, they activate it and give it life. For artist Jane Benson, this reflection of the students and school community represents the new world.
