My dad died yesterday, the first day of August.
He was a gentleman, and a gentle man. So many people have reached out, they all repeat the same things: He was gentle. He was curious. He was mischievous. And he was good.

My father loved movement and progress. Race cars, off-road motorbikes, marathons, cycle races. For years he logged the kilometers he ran, his heartbeats per minute. At 70 he taught himself to unicycle.
On Sundays when I was a kid, we’d ride motorbikes, just the two of us. He bought me my first at 8. It was probably risky to put an 8 year-old on a motorbike, but he trusted me. Because of him, I learned to trust myself.

He was deeply curious, always surrounded by piles of books. He was my search engine before I had one: he could explain anything mechanical, anything about the world. He never let an April Fools Day go by without turning the house upside down. He loved seeing people laugh more than almost anything.

We came to South Africa from Zimbabwe to start over with nothing. He spent his life giving my mom, my brother, and me everything.

My sweet dad. I loved him so, so much.

Wanted to cook so many lovely things while I was in Cape Town - the local ingredients are fantastic. This was made outside over fire on a little grill I bought - Cape mackerel on a smoky eggplant/aubergine kind of dip/sauce, with some charred peas and purple scallions, finished with lots of fresh lemon.
