POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Across the country and around the world, many people have been touched by Dr. Jane and her hopeful message.

She often spoke about how we are part of the natural world, and how we need to work together to protect our one and only home. At the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, we are honoured to do just that.

Together, with your support, we'll continue to do the work that Dr. Jane championed throughout her remarkable life.

That work includes her landmark research, now conducted by researchers at the Jane Goodall Institute's Gombe Stream Research Centre.

That work includes her animal welfare and protection, now carried out through the Institute's Tchimpounga Sanctuary for chimpanzees and other rescued animals.

That work includes her commitment to community-led conservation, now done with communities across Africa who are taking action.

And that work includes her support for young leaders, now carried out through Roots & Shoots – with more than 14,000 young people across Canada actively involved in projects.

Join us at JaneGoodall.ca and support this work. Each one of us has an important role to play, and it's up to us to do our part – so let's get to work.

When young people are trusted as partners, provided with mentorship, and supported to design solutions for the communities they live in, they can become powerful advocates for animals, people, and the environment.

Dr. Jane knew that – and over the past year, as the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada took part in the Global Outreach and Communication Mentorship program, our team came to see just how true that is.

This program brought together Jane Goodall Institute offices from different countries to strengthen youth leadership, mentorship, and communication.

Each country explored different ways to support young people as leaders. Canada focused on an often-overlooked challenge in the world today – digital scarcity in rural, remote, Northern, and Arctic communities.

To read more about how youth helped us explore this challenge, head on over to our blog – and check out the post that Alison from our Canada Programs team wrote. The link is in our bio.

We want you to meet the newest arrival at the Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga Sanctuary, Bili!

In Nigeria, she was rescued and got care from professionals at an internationally-accredited primate sanctuary. But that was not the best place for her – because western lowland gorillas are quite social, and they are not native to Nigeria.

The team at the Nigerian sanctuary knew that Tchimpounga was home to another western lowland gorilla, named Mozambique, and the opportunity was too good to pass up.

Several teams joined forces and worked together to organize her transfer from the Nigerian sanctuary to Tchimpounga.

Now that she has made her way to Tchimpounga, Bili can get care from our team of professionals in an environment that is near-wild and that can meet every one of her needs.

Thank you to the partners involved in the transfer: the Government of Nigeria, the Government of the Republic of the Congo, @FocusedConservation, @TheAspinallFoundation, @Pandrillus, @UnitedForWildlife, and DHL.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

This weekend, we're thanking Dr. Jane for what she gave us – all of us. She gave us her wisdom, her bravery, and her example that one person can make an incredible difference.

We're also thanking you – our wonderful community of supporters. We're honoured that you chose to stand with Dr. Jane, and we're grateful that you continue to stand with our team.

Together, let's advance her mission.

Let's support community-led conservation projects. Let's inspire young leaders through Roots & Shoots. Let's provide care for rescued chimpanzees. Let's champion scientific research. And let's spread Jane's message of hope.

These two words are not enough, but thank you!

Young people gave Jane hope. She knew that they were not just the leaders of the future, but that they were leading the way forward already and making the world better today.

We feel the same way.

But we also know that young people – young girls, especially – face real challenges and must overcome real obstacles. With support, with resources, and with guidance, these young leaders can do so much good.

We know this because Jane was once that girl. With support from her mother, she was able to do what she had dreamed of – and you know the rest. She changed science forever and inspired millions.

To make sure more young girls have that same shot, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is committed to working with partners who are addressing barriers, removing obstacles, and amplifying young leaders and the great ideas they have. (You can see some of those young leaders hard at work here.)

That is true on this #DayOfTheGirl and every other day of the year. Go to JaneGoodall.ca/What-We-Do to learn more about the work we do, both here at home and across Africa, with women and young girls. The link is in our bio.

Over the years, the chimpanzees at Tchimpounga have shown us what love looks like – and it's this.

This long weekend, we hope you can spend some time with your loved ones. Hold them close. Spend as much time at the table as you can. Be fully there.

From the Jane Goodall Institute's sanctuary for rescued animals to communities across Canada, here's to the ones who make every place feel like home.

"I'm going to make a commitment and I hope all of you will make a commitment, too."

What commitment did Jane make when she recorded this message? Watch the video to find out – and then, if you can, make the same commitment.

We can help you do that, too. Go to JaneGoodall.ca/Take-Action to see how you can do your bit. The link is in our bio. All of us, together, can make an incredible difference.

We don't want them to be patient zero!

Over the past six decades, the Jane Goodall Institute has been able to learn lots about carefully observing chimpanzees and protecting primates.

As you can see here, the team wears face masks to help keep the chimpanzees safe. These masks help protect the apes from human-borne illness, because even the common cold can make them sick – and worse.

The team also tends to stay at least seven metres away from the chimpanzees. This distance helps reduce stress and prevents accidental exposure to human diseases.

Want to learn more about this work – and how the team understands, anticipates, and addresses zoonotic diseases? Go to JaneGoodall.ca/Blog to read more. The link is in our bio.

Good news: Due to popular demand, we've extended the deadline for 2026-2027 A.P.E. Fund applications!

The new deadline is Tuesday, October 13th – that's just one week away from today, so don't wait too long. You don't want to miss out on this.

Roots & Shoots groups across Canada can now apply and get up to $1,000 to support the projects they have created that benefit animals, people, and the environment – like the ones you see here.

To learn more about the fund, and to find out how you can apply, go to JaneGoodall.ca/APEFund. The link is in our bio.

Thank you. We're blown away.

This past weekend, more than 830 people across Canada took part in the Jane Goodall Hike for Hope – to honour the legend herself and to support the work that her Institute does.

We know how hard all of you worked to raise funds for the cause – and we're happy to share that, as of today, you have raised nearly $96,000.

This means that we're able to keep getting chimpanzees the care they need, advancing community-led conservation initiatives, supporting youth-led environmental projects, and much more.

To everyone who took part in the Hike for Hope: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Make sure you check your inbox today – we sent you mail, and you can see Jane's complete message there!

Want to take part next year, too? You can sign up for the 2027 hike at the link in our bio – and we'll send you updates when we have them. Let's keep growing the movement that Jane started, Canada.
