POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Our town held a special meeting Thursday night to debate moving all public votes to Australian ballot. Currently, school budgets and elected officials are voted by Australian ballot, while municipal budgets and other concerns are voted from the floor.

The special meeting garnered significantly higher attendance than recent years’ Town Meeting Days. Community members engaged in nearly two hours of passionate—and mostly civil—discussion before voting by paper ballot. In the end, the vote was not close. 46 residents voted in favor of moving to Australian ballot, while 200 voted to retain Town Meeting. by @janelindholm

The most beautiful fairy ring across the road in our neighbor’s forest, spotted a few weeks ago. Fairy circles in the woods are considered “tethered” (as opposed to the “free” circles found in fields and lawns) because they are connected in a symbiotic relationship to one or more host trees. The trees give them sugars from photosynthesis and the mycorrhizal fungi support the trees by extending the surface area of their root system, providing them more access to water and essential nutrients. by @janelindholm

This little peeper stopped for a break on our porch door last night. We love seeing them stop by in the spring, but this is the first year we’ve seen one on our door in the fall. Peepers hibernate close to their breeding ponds, though we don’t have any ponds or vernal pools right near our house, so they must be traveling a little bit at least!

And peepers don’t overwinter in the water. They hunker down in leaf litter and have a special antifreeze that prevents ice crystals from forming in their cells. They can freeze almost solid as their metabolism all but shuts down. 🥶 Then they thaw out and hop back to their breeding pond in the spring! by @janelindholm

Quick trip to NYC with my girl. They’re already skating at Rockefeller Center! We didn’t do that, but we did a lot of shopping (Carys’s request), went to MoMA (my request), ate good NYC food, I performed in a show with other kidcasters, and we finished one audio book and started another. Good bonding time together, and lots of opportunities to enjoy city life but feel grateful for the peace and quiet of where we were heading home to at the end. by @janelindholm

Growing pains! Adults love to say it in business contexts so much that it's easy to forget that the expression actually comes from the physical pain kids experience as they're growing up. But what causes growing pains anyway? Should you be concerned? Let's talk about it.
