Opening reception for “Blanket Statements: The Philosophy of Linus” at the Schulz Museum with @gabbygamboa. It’s a good one, worth the trip. They did an especially excellent job with the Great Pumpkin display and it was cool to see some footage from Linus’ IRL namesake. I always feel lucky to live driving distance to the @schulzmuseum 🩷🩷🩷 by @janelleblarg

Behold the artifacts from John Turner’s estate sale that have now joined the Blarg Menagerie of Stuff Museum.
John Turner was a curator, artist, filmmaker, author, and a big champion of outsider and folk art. @lastgasp published at least one of his books while I was there and @confusionhill101 became buddies with him after screening his Korla documentary.
This was probably the most competitive estate sale I’ve ever been to. Me and @shpensherhicksh got there 2 hours early and were, like, 55th in line.😂😭 A bunch of pickers camped out overnight which I didn’t know was an option! Big ups to them. Even though they got some of my wish list items, I still scored big time.
1. Vintage yellow cab hat. Didn’t fit my nugget, came home anyway.
2. GLOOM just felt like a kindred spirit.
3. Filed under “hyuk”. Poster sized
4. Weird piece of Americana from a Teddy Roosevelt expedition in Brazil. “The Hellydid from the River of Doubt” was an inside joke that appeared in press pieces.
5. This lives at my studio now. 3D elements and reflective mirror.
7. 🥜
8. Clown props
9. I miss mail order catalogs
10. - 11. I cannot believe I managed to snag this. It was priced kinda high, saving it from the resellers. This used to live above a barber shop in Ghana, artist unknown.
12. A few of my favorite things
13. I actually put this back and kinda regret it. Hand painted from Southeast Asia, artist unknown. I wasn’t sure if I could live alongside the soldiers blowing up the monkeys in the top right.
14. Really really regret leaving behind a letter from Johnny Eck to John Turner. There was also a photo with it and it was written on this Crumb stationary. Ugggh. I should have bought it, I just had sticker shock.
15. John’s house in Berkeley.
16. My pal Kirk snagged this for me on a subsequent trip.
17. Thanks John Turner! A bunch of nice weirdos bought your stuff. 🩷 by @janelleblarg

Move over, novels! The evening belongs to the xeroxed, the stapled, and the gloriously homemade.

On September 28th at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society, Queens of Zines gathers three Bay Area makers who built careers out of cut paper and copy machines—featuring artists, authors, and DIY extraordinaires Janelle Blarg and Ariel Gore in conversation, moderated by graphic novelist Thien Pham.

Even though this year’s Mosswood Meltdown shirt featured crowd surfing John Waters and not Rodney, I’m still claiming this moment from the Dead Milkmen set as a psychic win 🔮🏆

Two not-exactly-employed friends wringing out the last bits of summer in Santa Cruz. We came for the dark rides, but stayed for the unexpected hillside full of pink flowers in the Pescadero cemetery.

A quote about punks from Dolly Parton’s autobiography.

I’ll have a couple of original drawings including this one at @capecowlcon this Sunday. Discount if you tell me a story of how Dolly Parton impacted your life.

@letigreworld ceremoniously gifted the Dolly autobiography book-on-tape to my old band Panty Raid on stage at the Magic Stick in Detroit sometime in the aughts. Certain lines def stuck with me ever since, by @janelleblarg

😭😭😭 I will always love Dolly. We were so lucky to have someone and something so pure here on earth.
The first time I saw Dolly, I cried. The second time, it magically started RAINING while she played Islands in the Stream. It was summer! In the Bay Area! She is magic forever.

Pay tribute today by being kind, funny, and wise while wearing the biggest wig you can lay your hands on.

Read my new @berkeleyside article featuring Jason White and (literally! metaphorically!) the path less taken. This was a fun one. Thanks, Jason! (🐶 & Linda!) ✌️
Shout-out to #oldmanberkeley & remember “if you see a path, take it”.

📬The Blarg shop is open!

😎Stuff by me including mini-comics, stickers, buttons, small batch apparel.

🤩Also available: original vintage comic Lonely Nights by Dori Seda as well as the collected Cyanide Milkshake by Liz Suburbia. Two artists you should worship like I do.

💜My plan is to keep the store open with a rotating batch of fresh goodies, at least through Christmas. Happy shopping! 💅 by @janelleblarg
