Fragments…a calming work for contemplation

This one was finished in June '24. It was the last one in a series of 6 which I made over 7 years. I have often had a work such as this 'on the go' for several months while I did other things. I believe I have one more in me. They take time!

They resonate with my much earlier interest in collage (would you call collage with fabric applique?) with contemporary batik.

I enjoy the gentle repeating rhythm of a block of 8 similar squares, each supporting an irregular shape which is surface mounted on cream card, trimmed and positioned so as to create a downward movement. The way the huge medley of colours blend, is very satisfying.
These are works that build. I never know at the start, what the effect will be, but always know that it will be just right.
Overall, this is a calming piece for contemplation of shape, colour and movement. by @janeortonart

Here's a more colourful composition of squares and layers (light shade and diagonal movement. Interesting relationships unfold as the small coloured diagonals of the 'tops'(which form by slicing diagonally through four squares) as these connect with each other. Using plain white card instead of the neutral coloured Chinese 'grass paper' that I often use was an opportunity to create crisp, sharp cuts instead of the slightly more textured edging. The coloured pieces are created with hot wax and dyes. I enjoy the 'soapy' texture of the wax. by @janeortonart

'Endless Fascination'...It's what they do in the light and how they dance that appeals. please swipe.

Showing how when layered squares are laid corner to corner, diagonals appear.
The coloured tops of the units are 6x6cm; with the layers they are 12x12cm. 30 units in all 52cmx60cm

not too sure how these blue tones appeared in the layers of the details...they are defintely not there in the full sized piece and the coloured pieces are pretty true to life?? I probably need to take more photos. by @janeortonart

This little detail is taken from the same piece of work as the last but one. I loved the texture and the colours.

I'm trying to get some videos together (with voice overs!) AND to figure out Lightroom and Canva while I wait for some supplies from Jacksons. Also trying to please the algorithm with postings. I would prefer to be completing the current work and onto the next one! Have to move with the times. by @janeortonart

'A thing of shreds and patches' this quote from the Mikado could be the title for a whole series of works in cloth that I made a few years back.
This little thing is the back of a batik, bleached back, drawing showing smudges of the glue that held it in place in a journal. (My journals are pretty much like my sketchbooks and consist of many pretty bits and pieces that I like). I love the torn edges. by @janeortonart

So many small pieces of colour have so much intensity.

Source

This was some source material that I DID use in my long search. It definitely had (and still has) more to give. Scroll if you are interested to see what small thing I plundered from it.

I have now placed it on top of a layered square and it will be a part of this bigger piece shown in the third photo.

Keep everything and recycle the good bits! This way a new piece of work becomes a distillation of many old ones that have served their purpose and are now stepping up.

I am hunting around for paintings from which I can cut bits of colour for the composition I am working on...These won't do! by @janeortonart

Inspiration!

these Jersey Tigers are coming into my London garden! It's a day flying moth. They flutter past me in a flurry of orange wings; too fast to take a photo until they settle...like this. Just amazing. I feel privileged that they are visiting. by @janeortonart

'PERFORMANCE'

A play in many acts.

Believe it or not, hours, days and weeks later, I am still working on this. I changed all of the colours I decided to use. (I already posted a shot of those colours weeks ago, but here it is again in the last photo). It's nothing like that. 😂thank heaven...it would have been too constrained.

Nothing is fixed down or even decided upon. Many of the top pieces still have to be trimmed to size. I have chosen some highly textured pieces and they don't cut up cleanly. Accuracy!!! I have to attain that or the whole work will not hum or dance. The layers help the diagonal movement and so do the triangles...but the colours have to work for the effect as well. And the rhythms must be interrupted.
Since I can no longer hear well, this is the best I can do with dancing and singing....at the moment!
I often wonder what on earth I am doing; giving myself this 'puzzle', making it harder and more complicated each time I start a new piece. Time to do a little pastel work and enjoy the simple flow of colour? But this fascinates me. I am working something out and I have little idea what that is.

The work is telling me what it wants and what it is about. by @janeortonart

Audrey's feet were hurting so she couldn't wear her Manolo's. Good job really as Dave was rather short. She dangled an arm around him casually and hoped they would be together, at least for the evening.

Blossom time in 9 parts
Things look so much better with space around them. I am learning more about doing this. It has taken a while. I could probably do those room set ups now, but they never appeal. by @janeortonart
