Merry Christmas! I finished my granddaughter Harriet’s stocking in time for Santa to fill it up with all the wonderful things he has at the North Pole.
The pattern is “Martha’s stocking by Shepherds Bush, stitched with the called for threads and with the embellishment pack which also comes from Shepherds Bush.

So pleased with how this sampler has turned out. I was attracted by the colourful parrots, and the curtains in the windows of the house, why those elements called ( shouted) to me I can’t say - they just did. Tha pattern is called “Rejoice Evermore “ designed by Brenda Gervais of With Thy Needle and Thread designs. It’s stitched on 36ct Antique White linen, using the called- for overdyed threads. I omitted the bible reference, and changed the style of the initials so that I could put in the date as well. Can’t wait to get it framed!

Gone out to be framed - this is “ABC aux feuilles de chene” (oak leaf ABC) by Rouge de Rhin, a chart I bought many years ago, I think from a craft fair. I think the chart may now be out of print. I stitched it on 32ct raw linen using 2 strands of my favourite DMC red thread, colour 3777.

Finished and framed - this reproduction sampler is “A stitch in time saves nine” charted by Hands Across the Sea samplers, chart exclusive to A Stitch in Time in Hobart, Tasmania. Regrettably, the stitcher didn’t put her name or any other identifying details on it, other than the date of July 1886. I bought this as a kit from A Stitch in Time, it came with a very generous cut of 36ct linen (Just the ticket, by Tabby Cat) and the beautiful red Au ver a Soie silk thread. The saying is special to me, as I now have my late mother’s pin dish (pictured) which was in constant use by her sewing machine all through my childhood. #nzcrossstitcher #crossstitchsamplers #handsacrosstheseasamplers #astitchintimeneedlework by @janepwarren1

Quilt for great nephew Pablo’s 21st birthday, finished and handed over recently ( he will be 23 later this year, so I’m late, as usual). I never had a pattern for this, but made it based on one of Jenny Doan’s videos for Missouri Star Quilt Co, about 10 years ago (google “zipper quilt” and you’ll find it).
The fabrics are almost all prints by Janet Clare from several of her collections, plus a solid navy. I quilted it with an all over meander using variegated thread. This is a really simple quilt to make, and I think it would look good in almost any kind of fabrics. The only thing that matters is that Pablo likes it!! #nzquilter #janetclarefabric #missouristarquiltco by @janepwarren1

Back home in NZ after an amazing weekend at the A Stitch in Time retreat in Hobart, Tasmania, with Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Sea Samplers. Such generosity from both Kerrilyn of A Stitch in Time, and from Nicola - the whole weekend was like being enveloped in a giant hug!
The retreat project was a darning sampler, adapted from an original in Nicola’s collection. My progress was not as much as many of the attendees - because I was so fortunate to find myself at Table 17 with an amazing group of women, where much chat was had, and friendships forged , that the stitching was somewhat intermittent!
The linen for the sampler is 40ct Inca Light by Fox & Rabbit, with DMC thread colour 321.

“Come into my Garden” is finished at last! I started this piece, designed by Blackbird Designs, back in September of 2023 - it’s been a long time in the making, and I’m really proud of the end result. This is the first sampler I’ve put my name on ( usually just do initials), and for some reason I don’t fully understand, I’m not comfortable with that. Will leave it where I can see it for a while and see if I get used to it. The name might come out!
The sampler is stitched on 36 ct linen in the colour “eggshell “ by Fibre on a Whim. I used the called for overdyed cotton threads. #nzcrossstitcher #blackbirddesigns #blackbirddesignscrossstitch #crossstitchsampler by @janepwarren1

“Enjoy all the little things” from the book Cross Stitch for the Earth by Emma Congdon. These little critters were fun to stitch, although they were mostly just blobs until their legs and other appendages were backstitched in! This is stitched on a piece of 28ct white evenweave which has been lurking at the back of a bin for a very long time. All DMC threads. I wrapped a cheap hoop with some toning fabric left over from a long ago quilt. Now it’s on the wall in the children’s room at Waitarere.

Another sampler finished! This is “Quaker Sampling 1” by Ellen Chester for With my Needle, a chart from 2006 (still available). Mine is stitched on 36ct Confederate Grey linen by Weeks Dye Works, the thread is Classic Colourworks “Wavy Navy”. A fat quarter of the linen has left enough to stitch the second of the two designs, maybe in a different colour?

This is “Hedge Row”, designed by Plum Street Samplers. I am only very rarely attracted to “cute” or whimsical things, but couldn’t resist this family of hedgehogs- one of my favourite small animals. First attempt at 40ct linen, loved the coverage with one strand of DMC threads. The instruction for the spines was that they should be stitched “randomly”. Aaargh!!! That was the hardest thing. I love this little family 🦔🦔🦔. #nzcrossstitcher #plum streetsamplers. by @janepwarren1

This small sampler is a reproduction of Sarah Platt’s sampler, the original stitched in 1811. Charted by Pineberry Lane. The colours are really subtle, but in real life they’re much prettier than they appear in the pattern picture. I really enjoyed stitching this one, quirks and all (can you see where she ran out of space at the end of her alphabets, and just let both Z’s run right through the border). Love reproduction samplers!! This is stitched on 36cy Vintage Maritime White linen from Lakeside Linens, and using the called- for threads.

Framing picked up just before the end of the year, and now hung on the wall. It’s the “Little Birds Quaker Sampler” by Modern Folk Embroidery, finished in 2022. First time in many years I’ve had stitching framed with a mat (two in fact) and I really like how it’s turned out. Stitched with 2 strands of DMC 930 on 32ct Vintage Smoky White Zweigart linen. There are 22 little birds!! #nzcrossstitcher #modernfolkembroidery #littlebirdsquakersampler #quakersamplers by @janepwarren1
