To the woman who does it all…
To the woman who supports my dreams and aspirations…
To the woman who pushes me towards my fears…

Thank you for this gift of a lifetime. This path can be discouraging sometimes. Full of doubts about money, time and energy. But the dream was put in my head for a reason and you are helping me get there. Im happy we got to experience this together. I love you Ma❤️

Coastal Alumni & proof it takes a village🫂

Thank you to my family for pushing me through this. I turned 18 a week before moving 14 hours away. Not knowing a single person or place, forced to join clubs and organizations but I met so many wonderful people along the way (many who aren’t pictured just yet). Pictures from many senior ceremonies and celebrations. I was blessed to stand beside many of my best friends, classmates and coworkers during graduation. How blessed am I to have my family and those who became family along the way beside me🩵 by @janessal15

I came to Coastal in hopes of graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science. The first year, I passed my classes but struggled in others. Attended every office hour. Stayed up in the study lounge. Going through quizlets any second I could but it just wasn’t enough. I was faced with the decision to stay in the Marine Science degree and watch my GPA drop while losing scholarships that kept me here or change my major and start over.
I had no idea what other major to switch to because there was nothing else I wanted to do. I went to my advisor, crying and begging him to help me figure this out. Thats when he said to me, “You might like a Sustainability and Coastal Degree” so I read through it and I took the chance. Words I never heard or seen before, classes that felt out of my realm but I showed up and showed out. I fell in love with my professors, my classmates and the overall work we did to find sustainable ways of living. Each student in the classroom had their own interests and future paths but we came together as one. It was a sense of community that I did not have in the M.S field. I stuck with the focus of SDG 14: Life Below Water. Working in sea turtle rehabilitation has been my dream.
Fast forward to Fall semester of 2024 (junior year) I had the chance to take the Marine Biology course so I did. Almost 2 months in, I was not giving myself enough time, energy or my all to pass the class the way I wanted to. So again, I was faced with a decision so stay and possibly fail or choose another option.
When I applied for graduation they declined me. I was in shock because I thought me and my advisor worked through everything to make sure I graduated in 4 years. Somewhere along the way, I was missing 3 credits to meet the graduation requirement. So again… another decision that could affect my whole future. Instead of taking a bs class and finishing the credit count, I decided to take Marine Biology AGAIN in the summer of 2026. A 4 week course, focused solely upon hands-on experience and lab work. Rather than just having a course credited on my transcript, I knew taking this step will push me further into the field. I walked but my story is not done. by @janessal15

Where it all started…

I remember being worried because it was 29 days till move in and I didn’t have a housing assignment. I worried even more about WHO I was going to live with. I finally gave one last call and they placed me in a suite with 9 other girls. Yes you read that right, 10 girls, 3 sinks, 2 stalls, and 2 showers. I immediately texted the girl named Jaylin Pitt. Since the first day we texted, I knew we would be friends. Her and her mother welcomed me with open arms and even brought me home to NY. Elissa, you may have never slept in the dorm but you started this journey with us too. The first few nights we were inseparable. Those rooms heard so many cries, laughs and screaming. Walking down those halls one last time, every memory replayed in my head. Talking ourselves to sleep in the dark. Living off microwaveable foods. Movie nights in the lounge. Long nights in the study room (not a lot of studying happened). My favorite time was going to build-a-bear and creating Chant & Chanta (get it?). To finally Jaylin and I getting our room number tatted on our ankles… while sitting in our room…. after our moms said it wasnt a good idea SHHHHH.

The forever lasting 3. I can’t wait to continue this life journey with you both. taken in 229 by @janessal15
