“Accessories make everything better”. When you read this quote what do you think of as an accessory? Is it just an object or a piece of clothing, or a complement of you or your outfit? Or more than that? Let me know your thoughts about it in the comments below.

Happy Monday gemstone talk everyone! It has been an honor and a pleasure to investigate different gemstones to bring you information every Monday. Doing this for you has brought me knowledge and more interest in gems. However, I’ll be trying out new material and information, since I am aiming for some changes in the future. I hope you have enjoyed these Monday articles as well as I have. With this being said, today is all about jet.

Jet is a type of lignite, the lowest rank of coal, and is a gemstone. Unlike many gemstones, jet is not a mineral, but is rather a mineraloid. It is derived from wood that has changed under extreme pressure. It ranks at 2.5 - 4 on the Mohs scale.

Jet is found in two forms, hard and soft. Hard jet is the result of carbon compression and salt water; soft jet may be the result of carbon compression and fresh water. Despite the name they both occupy the same range of the Mohs scale with the difference being that soft jet is more likely to crack when exposed to changes in temperature.

Jet is either black or dark brown, but may contain pyrite inclusions which are of brassy color and metallic luster. The adjective "jet-black", meaning as dark a black as possible, derives from this material.

Jet may be found in England, France, Spain and the United States. Jet is also commercially mined in Poland and near Erzurum in Turkey, where it is used to make prayer beads.

Real jet, when placed in a flame, burns like coal and gives off a coal-like smell and produces soot. No other black "gemstone" behaves like this.

Happy Sunday everyone!!

I agree very much with this quote. Accessories are the accent that make the outfits pop up to their maximum. Whatever is your style of clothing combine it with a good accessory and you will be complete to shine.

Hi everyone! Happy Monday gemstone talk, today I decided to talk about Herkimer diamonds. Are these real diamonds? Let’s see.

Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals discovered within exposed outcrops of dolomite in and around Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. Not actually diamonds, the "diamond" in their name is due to both their clarity and natural faceting - crystals possess double termination points and 18 total faces (six on each point, six around the center). Because the first discovery sites were in the village of Middleville and in the city of Little Falls, respectively, the crystal is also known as a Middleville diamond or a Little Falls diamond. It ranks at 7.5 on Mohs scale.

Some of the best places to find "Herkimer diamonds" today are located along New York State Routes 28 and 29 near Middleville, New York. (When visiting this area, it is important to remember that all land in New York either belongs to the government or is private property. Collecting minerals from government lands is illegal in New York, and collecting on private property always requires permission in advance.

There are several commercial mines on New York State Routes 28 and 29. These include Ace of Diamonds Mine, Herkimer Diamond Mines, and Crystal Grove Diamond Mine and Campground. These mines allow collectors to enter and prospect for a nominal fee.

The name "Herkimer diamond" is a misnomer. A misnomer is a name that is intentionally or inadvertently incorrect. It is incorrect because the crystals called "Herkimer diamonds" are quartz crystals rather than diamond crystals.

The word "diamond" grabs attention and may imply a higher value to the person who hears it than the word "quartz." As a result, some people might be misled or confused by the name "Herkimer diamond." For that reason, anyone who is selling "Herkimer diamonds" must be sure to let all buyers know that they are purchasing quartz and not a real diamond.

Large numbers of Herkimer crystals are also used in jewelry because their natural "facets" are both beautiful and interesting.

Hello everyone! Another Monday, another Monday gemstone talk, today I’ll be talking about larimar. Let’s begin.

Larimar is a rare blue variety of the sodium calcium silicate mineral pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue. It ranks at 4.5 - 5 on Mohs scale.
The name Larimar came from mixing the name of Miguel Mendez, who rediscovered larimar in 1974, his young daughter's name, Larissa, and the Spanish word for sea (mar) and formed Larimar, to suggest the colors of the Caribbean Sea where it was found.
Larimar jewelry is offered to the public in the Dominican Republic, and elsewhere in the Caribbean as a local specialty. Most jewelry produced is set in silver, but sometimes high-grade larimar is also set in gold.
Quality grading is according to coloration and the typical mineral crystal configuration in the stone. Larimar also comes in green and even with red spots, brown strikes, etc., due to the presence of other minerals and/or oxidation. But the more intense the blue color and the contrast in the stone, the higher and rarer is the quality. The blue color is photosensitive and fades with time if exposed to too much light and heat.
Larimar is said to enlighten and heal in a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual way. It stimulates the heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras facilitating inner wisdom and outer manifestation. It represents peace and clarity, radiating healing and love energy. It is said to be a healing stone.

Care
You can wipe down your stones using a soft cloth. When cleaning, use only warm water and a mild soap or detergent. Remove all the soapy residues by washing it well. Always remove all Larimar jewelry before you engage in rigorous physical activities. Avoid exposure to chlorine, including that in swimming pools and hot tubs.
