The only WNBA debate I’m willing to entertain. All women are women. The WNBA represents progress and inclusion. TERFs are conservative pawns.

The people are celebrating Rosie! I love when everyone tributes someone who is alive! And I love Rosie O’Donnell. Her talk show debuted when I was 10. It was my daily sacred sanctuary. (Not unique to me!)

Fast forward to 2017. I had just moved to LA from NYC. I missed my community, especially my UCB community which orbited around The Female Gaze, a parody of The View I was so lucky to co-create with the incomparable @caitorade and @nayomireghay and get to host with 12 of the funniest people I admired most. Surreal to begin with.

One day, Nayomi told us that she had landed the white whale. The Gaze had booked Rosie.

It felt impossible. This megastar, larger than life, coming down to a grocery store basement for no money to fuck around with a bunch of her biggest fans for free. She didn’t even live in the city. So inconvenient.

I flew back to NYC, went to UCB, and backstage before the show, I was alone with Rosie. I saw her and burst into tears.

She looked at me and asked, “Did your mother die?”

I asked her how she knew. “When someone reacts to me like that, their mother died or they’re gay.”

We sat in the dressing room, just us, her assistant and @spotastic. We talked about grief, losing parents, life and Trump. Shame, Hollywood, everything. It was the most surreal moment of my life. It was beyond anything my 10-year-old self could have dreamed of. I still can’t believe it.

We have so many parasocial relationships with celebrities. Meet them and the magic is lost. They’re guarded, impersonal, sometimes rude. They get strangers like me crying all the time. But sitting with Rosie, this icon I had known for 25 years, it genuinely felt like she had known me too.

Her Gaze appearance was incredible. She treated our basement with the respect she’d treat a Broadway theater. It was amazing to be among fellow fans.

I loved @rosie when I was 6, I loved her when I was 10, 14, 30, I loved her the day we met, and I love her today.

We honor the dead by recognizing their greatest achievements, but it’s also so spectacular to know what made them most human. I loved my conversation with the amazing @kristenrbartlett. I got to learn about her wonderful dad — what a special guy he was. We talked all about death, how to be supportive to a griever, and what life looks like after you know too much. Full wonderful episode now on YouTube! by @janiefierce

Last year, inspired by @thedinnerparty, a non-profit with which I host a double parental loss support group, I invited two of my favorite people to my table to discuss our grief experience, what support looks like, and the healing power of community.

@alyssalimp, one of my favorite people on earth, kindly talked about losing her beloved dad Jim and what support looked like after.

The Dinner Party taught me that no matter what makes you feel isolated, I promise that there is someone else out there who relates, and the simple act of connecting with someone who *gets it* will change your life. I hope that for whatever reason(s) you feel alone, you find a way to find the people who are like you for that very same feeling of aloneness.

I do not wish to be perceived on Instagram so I am chopping up the episode for TikTok. Feel free to watch there, but the entire thing can be watched on YouTube, links in bio.

Thank you so much @alyssalimp.

Thank *you* for reading and watching.

I had applied to be a counselor at @experiencecamps THREE times before finally getting the go-ahead. Nerves were high!

I have to be honest. I was anxious as hell about things going wrong. I don’t take the privilege of holding someone’s grief with them lightly, and I’d never had that experience with kids.

Everyone kindly assured me not to worry. That grief camp would be meaningful, but a lot of that meaning gets expressed through fun, connection, laughter, dancing, play and hugs.

Grief camp ended up being a day and a half due to wildfire evacuations, and the amount of all of the above that was hyper-densely packed into that tiny timeframe blows my mind.

All my anxieties were unfounded.

The power didn’t work. And the kids didn’t care.

The weather was hot as hell. The kids didn’t care.

The fires were encroaching. The kids didn’t care. (So so hard to send them home.)

They just wanted to dance, play games, do the slip ’n’ slide, run around serenading their fellow campers and make friendship bracelets.

I am so in awe of the kind, vibrant, talented, funny, smart, thoughtful kids I got to meet; the incredible leaders (medical, clinical, programming) who have such beautiful hearts they make me cry; and my fellow counselors who modeled what it’s like to be a locked in caregiver, sometimes with so much energy that I was frankly jealous.

There are @experiencecamps across the country, and they’re available for all gender expressions, at zero cost. Check them out.

Thank you, everyone at @experiencecamps. Til next year! by @janiefierce

I have one dream for America: a stronger democracy for the next generation. And this is only accomplished by voting on who is famous.
