🚨There is currently a demolition permit open for a developer (prospective buyer) to be able to demolish the Magic Beach Motel constructed in 1951 and one of the last remaining 1950s style motor courts in Florida. In 1991, the television show Safe Harbor was filmed in Vilano, using the motel with its iconic neon-lit building with many attached flamingos and an entry marquee with rabbits jumping out of a magician’s hat. Located next door to Magic Beach, the developer Colonia publicly revealed on 3/19 a replacement building, but with no site plan. The conceptual image presented would have no art deco architectural features and would have twenty (20 ) two-bedroom residences plus 8 retail places from 450 to 700 SF.

If you have already completed a letter for the April 14, 2025 Cultural Resource Review Board, you may certainly send another and show up at the June 30, 2025 scheduled meeting in the SJ County Auditorium. Please voice your position to the SJ Commissioners who may ultimately decide the fate of this historic structure. BOCCoffice@sjcfl.us

How can you make a difference to the outcome and help?
🐇 (1) Attend the meeting on June 30. Wear red to make yourself seen when a grassroots group is asked to stand up. Compose a 3 minute public comment to read, timing it, and putting the most important information up front in case you get cut off.

🐇 (2) And/or email a note of concern, even if it is only a sentence, to (a) the Cultural Resource Review Board : mwright@sjcfl.us, (b) with a copy to the county commissioners : BOCCoffice@sjcfl.us. Colonia del Sacramento is a city in southwestern Uruguay, accessible by ferry across the Río de La Plata from Buenos Aires. ⛴️

It’s a @unescoworldheritage World Heritage Site.

It’s known for its cobblestoned Barrio Histórico (Cobblestoned historic district), lined with historic buildings from its time as a Portuguese settlement. ⛪️

Set above the historic district is the 19th-century Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse , offering sweeping river views. Nearby lies the Portón de Campo, remnants from the old city walls.

About 27,000 people live in Colonia. I could see myself living there. It feels alive, with animals, birds, people, the sea. 🦋

If you go to Buenas Aires you can visit Colonia del Sacramento in a day trip via a ferry.

I’d love to go back for a longer stay.

🌋 Annobón Island - Is a small volcanic island off the coast of Gabon but really belongs to Equatorial Guinea. With only a population of approximately 5000, it’s a rarely visited island and has no real capacity for tourists or travelers in the form of hotels or dining.

We made a day trip by plane, hiked up to the lake at the top of the the extinct volcano (I almost died, lol) and visited the beach.

The official language is Spanish but most of the inhabitants speak a creole form of Portuguese. We also met a guide from Gabon who spoke French. So between us we managed to get by. The island’s inhabitants are of mixed Portuguese and Angolan descent, with some Spanish admixture.

It’s so small there is no regular shipping service to the mainland, so they are fairly self reliant on fishing for food and the occasional mainland ships.

The people were friendly, happy and kind.

There was a lot of activity on this day and we found out a food market was having its grand opening and the entire island turned out to celebrate!!

Travel 🧳. It’s what I live for!! I’ve managed to craft a life that allows travel. Not just vacations, which are escapes from daily life, but travel, which is an escape to adventure.

To travel a lot, it almost becomes an obsession. Finding ways that you can, not falling victim to excuses why you can’t.

While I often travel with friends, families and groups, I also travel alone frequently. And I love it just as much. It’s totally freedom!!

If you want to travel more, don’t just think “I can’t”, ask “how can I?”

Sleeping on the ground in Antarctica when a wind and hail storm blew in. No tents. No way to get back to the boat. Just tough it out. We did it. I have to much to say about this experience, but I think the video captures it pretty well.
