🥭 PNW: Overland, Overseas 🥭Today, an estimated 15 million Filipinos live outside of the Pacific archipelago. Many are overseas workers, and even more are the descendants whose ancestors left the motherland– for opportunity, for survival, for a new start. After centuries of colonization and an ongoing struggle for resources and opportunity in the homeland, Filipinos find themselves all over the world making a home where they might never have imagined.In the Pacific Northwest and more specifically Portland, Oregon, we’re exploring what it means to carry on our ancestral legacies without the immediate ties to our lands and seas. With respect for the people who have stewarded the land before us, we choreograph the balance of setting down roots– finding space for our own growth with what’s already planted. That we may still bloom in our own way.With a nod to classical Filipino paintings by Fernando Amorsolo, these portraits are an homage to carrying on the culture and the quiet resilience of Filipino women, no matter where we find ourselves. 📸 🎞️ Tomorrow’s my birthday. Being injured right now is not exactly what I planned, but life happens and I’ve got no choice but to roll with the punches. Other than my body failing me right now, 35 was shaping up to be bright for this sampaguita bb. Thank you to @extracelestial for embarking on this mini project with me for my birthday and for helping me explore my softer side. They are all exceptional, but the ones captured with film are particularly special to me. During our brainstorm session, we were looking to evoke memories of our culture while still paying homage to our current home here in PDX Metro. Cue the star jasmine wall that Celeste so kindly found via her gardening group, scouted out and quickly made arrangements and adjusted schedules so she could capture it in it’s full glory. Once we arrived on shoot day, the fragrance enveloped us and immediately reminded us of sampaguita, the national flower of the Philippines.If you look deeper into the history, you’ll find that the flower was chosen in February 1934 by Governor-General Frank Murphy while the Philippines was still controlled by the United States to symbolize the hope, fidelity, dedication, and strength of the Filipino people. Its name is Spanish-influenced, and stems from the phrase “sumpa kita” which translates to “I promise you” or “I swear to you” and can be used as a curse or a grave promise. Though the flower has roots in colonialism, this is my attempt to understand all the good and the bad of this part of my history in order to reclaim it and hopefully create something good during this process of self-reflection.
