This month’s featured artist at Gibraltar Point is Janine Miedzik. Janine joined us in July for a self-directed writer’s residency.

“I am a Toronto based visual artist. I have a multidisciplinary practice that moves between site-specific public installations, and intimate gallery sculpture and textile-based wall-works .

My work uses functional urban languages like traffic signage, wayfinding markers, and graphic icons into abstract fields of perception and incorporates everyday job-site materials like sign vinyl, gaffer and vinyl tape, cinefoil, commercial drop cloths and paint sprayers.

During my stay at Gibraltar I was able to work on two inflatables and one panel addition to my work BLANKET, ( a mobile sauna cover which was commissioned by PUBLIC SWEAT and travelled to Minnesota and will be featured in the upcoming permanent home on Wards Island. Having access to a studio sewing machine, work table and the space in my large portable to inflate and alter these works was absolutely ideal and I was able to transport components back and forth from the new site to complete our new additions! Doing physical work has never been also so beautiful and restful —deep focus and undisturbed work hours combined with a daily frosty swim and morning coffee on the beach was just what I needed.”

🖼️ Janine Miedzik: Turn Signal / Next Exit @ Industrial Arts, Markham 🖼️

Steelcase Art Projects is pleased to present Turn Signal / Next Exit, an exhibition by Toronto-based artist Janine Miedzik.

Janine Miedzik’s background as a fine art painter has been shaped by her experience working as a window dresser, prop builder, set dresser, and house painter. Her approach draws directly from these trades, paying close attention to the often-unseen supports within these environments—scrims, signage, drop cloths, and tarp covers found across job sites, retail displays, and film sets.

Over the past several years, Miedzik’s practice has moved fluidly between large-scale public works and more intimate formats, exploring tensions between permanence and temporality. Using materials sourced from construction sites—sign vinyl, gaffer tape, duct tape, and cinefoil—she creates bold compositions. These surface treatments form the basis of her shapeshifting artworks characterized by vivid colours that punctuate the urban landscape.

Inspired by transitory urban spaces, her work isolates and recontextualizes graphic icons and wayfinding systems. Removed from their functional purpose, these visual languages shift from tools of navigation to abstract fields of perception.

Turn Signal / Next Exit is on view through August 2026.
Public Opening Reception: June 6, 2026, 1 – 3pm
