What a good day, y’all!

I PRd my squat 10 pounds with 347 (17 lb platform PR). I chipped my best bench hitting 210. I hit a 5 lb deadlift PR 358 lbs, (17 lb platform PR). 21 lb total PR. Taking home all the Florida masters records too.

This is my first ever nine-for-nine day. I’d never have thought my first nine-for-nine day would be with a torn labrum, a hurty ass elbow, and a recovering right foot and ankle sprain. Alls I’m saying is—just wait till I’m healed up.

I call this one “writing at the local library listening to guys outside the workroom rustling plastic bags of personal items and arguing over an electrical outlet: weird hand.”

Good news: I have four publications coming out in the coming months—two short stories, a silly fictional transcript of a call made to the Gainesville police nonemergency line, and a Marine flash piece.

End of summer and we’ve sweat at the Jax Zoo, La Chua Trail, and Sweetwater. Been to Little Talbot, Vilano, and Crescent Beaches. Sweat a lot in our house when the AC was out for a couple weeks. Got used to it so I signed back up for hot yoga.

This summer I reread all of Claire Keegan’s books, revisited Tolstoy and O’Connor. I wrote most days, played a lot of Tanya Tucker on repeat.

Found out my forthcoming publication was selected for honorable mention—woo hoo! Another short story of mine will be published in January.

I ran some slow miles with Lou.

Maddy drew us as Garbage Pail Kids. I’m Jammed Janna, you know, because of my claustrophobia.

It’s been a season of mocktails, late-night Golden Girls, weird experimental sausage recipes. Rueben built a pull-up bar in the yard so we can now pull up to our hearts’ content.

It’s been a while so here are some updates:

We just returned from a trip to PA, where Rueben painted a mural with his father and brother commemorating the 250th, and a visit to my folks in VA to see Mom who just underwent a quadruple heart bypass and is thankfully back to her usual boss lady self.

We entered the Catholic Church on Easter.

I have a story being published in the fall, and I’ve been accepted into a writer residency in France June 2027.

Maddy and I have folded more than 100 paper cranes.

The dogs escaped from our hotel room in Va Beach and crossed a busy road to enter a pizza shop before coasting the boardwalk together where we found them. Lou ran up to Maddy and they fell to the ground like a movie scene. Meadow was big-eye crazed.

Our hedgehog is still alive and smells terrible.

I still lift, of course.

This year I started moisturizing my face regularly and made no less than 20 focaccias. We expanded our family exactly one dog. I reread The Brothers Karamazov and broke out War and Peace for a second read-through. Maddy and I began taking violin lessons; we played our first recital. I have been coaxing back to life my fiction stories I’d left dead years ago. I sold a gym to a good friend. Rueben and I may learn how to do the splits, for fun. We started the process of becoming Catholic. We will be confirmed on Easter. 2025 was a hot dog of a year. Happy New Year, y’all!

I’m entering into the age of new things—learning violin, revising old stories with a fresh perspective, learning Italian and Russian (poorly). I’m learning how to run long distances again after five full years of competitive powerlifting. I’m learning how to make key lime pie, better bread, an impressive roast. I’m learning the prayers recited in mass and when to do the hand gestures. From all these angles I’m a newborn ball of goo and wonder. by @janna_moretti

What started as a passion project turned into a bigger passion project and now is a full-blown gym. No longer just an open gym—we have classes, a couple coaches who offer different specializations, free community events. We do outreach and fundraise for local businesses and organizations. We host sanctioned powerlifting meets.

Admittedly, this special place has outgrown what I can justly give to it as a full-time professor. After a year of reflection I’ve decided to pass this power house along to a good friend who has been instrumental in making Gainesville Barbell what it is today. I’m so happy to announce that @gainerlifts will be taking over the helm on October 1.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us, and thank you for your continued support of Gainesville Barbell.
